Buckeye Tailbacks - 2005 (official thread)

Based on my conversations with Doc, I think you will see Haw and Pittman share time, Wells may get a RS, and Johnson share time with White and Schnittker.
I hope they don't try to redshirt Wells. I think it's too much to have two guys getting all of the carries over the course of a year. What are they going to do if Pittman or Haw go down in the middle of the season? You're then left with one back with game experience and have to pull Wells' redshirt. The thought of only having three backs is scary enough, why try to only use two?

At Fullback, Schnittker should be the starter, but Johnson will play a bunch and could pry the starting job from Brandon by the Northwestern game. People tend to forget just how good a receiver Schnittker is. Stan White I can see as an H-back type in heavy sets.
IMO, Johnson should be starting at FB. How many times do we have to see Schnittker get knocked on his ass in the hole before he gets pulled? Is Brandon a good receiver because of the catch he made against scUM in '02? He's done nothing with the ball in his hands to warrant playing time over a much better blocker. In three seasons he has five carries for 13 yards and eight catches for 72 yards.

If they don't throw the ball to him, how can anyone who doesn't know him judge his ability to catch. By that logic, Ricky Dudley couldn't catch either because they never threw the ball to him in Oakland. The question is, how often has Zwick/Smith had a chance to look for the 4th or 5th receiver? Its been quite rare. And surely we don't have too many plays where the primary or secondary target is the FB. And as for the one catch against tSUN two years ago, it was one hell of a catch considering it was meant for Jenkins 12 yards behind him. Almost 10 yards a reception is bad.

A lot of this is moot if we're running the Shot-Ginn next year. 70% of the time, the FB will be on the sideline with the kicker.

Exactly. How can you talk about how well he can catch the ball and I can't mention it being a moot point because he hasn't done anything with the ball? Other than that one catch against scUM I can't recall a single thing Schnitker has done on the field except get knocked on his ass by the NC State linebacker.

Based on my conversations with Doc, I think you will see Haw and Pittman share time, Wells may get a RS, and Johnson share time with White and Schnittker.

I am not sure whether to take that as a remarkably encouraging comment about Haw and Pittman (both in terms of talent and rumored off field issues) or a negative statement about Wells (and his need to bulk up a bit). I belive it is the former. However, like most of us, I am a bit gun shy from all the injuries the past three seasons and the thought of trying to make it with just two RBs is tough to be comfortable with. But the post-Ross era is upon us - so who knows?

I can see them trying to put the shirt on Wells, although under the philosophy of "A pair and a spare" I don't see how they'll do it. Maybe there are some position swtiches in order?

21, you indicated (I think it was you) that Guilford may be back? Hunch or info?

Play em all

Hell let's play everybody. I think we get at least one more high quality back to go along with C. Wells next year so there will be a log jam coming. Who, among the incoming freshman, do you see beating out C. Wells? I see M. Wells as a compliment - thunder and lightning someday. I think M. Wells will be great but not next year. I don't think he has the body right now for a lot of big 10 touches or blocking. He will have to come out on passing downs till he grows and learns the system. Then, he will be a huge threat as a check down receiver out of the backfield. Still, I don't think you redshirt talent like this. I hope Lennix is a fast lineback eventually but either way he should have a lot to offer special teams so he doesn't redshirt. This is Russel's big chance to get ahead of C. Wells in the spacing for power back so he needs to take it. I hope Ira's back with a new attitude. We might be to deep at safety to for him to make it back on defense (same with Russel and Lennix) but he should know how to pick up a blitzer and be or other back with significant playing time under his belt.

Hope also springs eternal. This year I believe we will have an offensive line and fullback that will make all our running backs look good.

I can't see us not using M. Wells. I think in a backfield (with Smith) that has the potential to do a lot of flashy and exciting things, you have to use a scat back like Wells. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of confidence in Haw and Pittman, but I am not too excited about the thought of only using the 2 backs until at least one of them goes down, which is almost inevitable at some point during the season for at least one game.

Once we get C. Wells in, and perhaps another '06 back, we will have one of the most balanced and thorough backfields in the nation. We'll have the stable that we need at tOSU once again.

I dont think we could get through the season with just 2 backs. Look at what happened to Iowa. They were down to their 5th RB when they played us and that was only like what the 7th game. I see Pittman and Haw getting the majority of the carries but wells could be good for situations in the shot-ginn offense and screens, etc. IMO he needs to prove himself as much as possible because I think once C. Wells gets here he will start just like Clarett did when he came in early.

How did Ira earn all of these buckeye leaves? ST?

Well, 10 of them came from the wins we had prior to the Fiesta Bowl against KSU, where that photo was taken, plus 6 additonal for the Big Ten wins. So, he had 16 for just being a participating member of the team. Remember that he also filled in at RB a bit, too, that season.

Ira's not coming back

Lack of Forward Progress: Former running back/defensive back Ira Guilford has been out of the football program since having a run in with the law last fall. According to Tressel, there is little chance that he will return to the Buckeyes. "I'm not sure that there's a chance, because of the amount of hours you need to move toward progressing to your degree," Tressel said.

"I think it's doubtful."
