The Buckeyes ended their Fall schedule of the 2015-2016 season earlier in the week by traveling to Windermere, FL for the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational tournament, played at the Isleworth Golf & Country Club. The 54 hole event, played Sunday through Tuesday, was was contested on a course that played at 7,544 yards to a par of 72. That is a really long golf course.

The format was ‘play five count four’, where a school fields 5 players, and the low 4 scores for each round are counted. Fifteen teams participated in this event, including ten teams in the GolfWeek/Sagarin Top 50. This was a pretty tough field of competitors.

The participating players participating were: SR Tee-K Kelly, JR Addison Coll, JR Clark Engle, r-SR Grant Weaver and FR Caleb Ramirez. This was Ramirez’s first event of the season.

Overall

The Buckeyes finished in 13th place this week, with a team total of 910 (+46). In their previous event, they also finished in 13th place, but with a team score of (+6). If they’d had shot (+6) this week, Ohio State would have finished in 3rd place. This was a tough, tough golf course.

The Buckeyes were paced by “rookie” Caleb Ramirez 221 (+5). Caleb’s score was good enough to tie for 20th place in the 75 player field. That’s a great showing in his first tournament, played on a tough layout. Three Buckeyes were bunched in scoring; Tee-K Kelly (229 (+13), Clark Engle 231 (+15) and Addison Coll 232 (+16). Grant Weaver followed with a 238 (+22).

Player round by round scores, below:

Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Total To Par
Team 296 304 310 910 46
Caleb Ramirez 74 75 72 221 5
Tee-k Kelly 74 75 80 229 13
Clark Engle 74 76 81 231 15
Addison Coll 74 78 80 232 16
Grant Weaver 81 79 78 238 22
First Round

The Buckeyes started out well enough in their first round, shooting a team score of 296 (+8), placing them in 9th place. Clark, Tee-k, Caleb and Addison each shot 74 (+2) to contribute to the score. Grant just couldn’t get anything going, shooting an 81 (+9).

Clark had a steady 2 birdie-4 bogey round. Tee-k shot 3 birdies – 5 bogeys and Caleb had 3 birdies – 5 bogeys. Addison changed it up a bit with 3 birdies and 2 double bogeys. Grant had 2 double bogeys but just could get any birdie putts to drop to offset the doubles.

Second Round

For the 2nd round, the Buckeyes shot a team total 304 (+16). Ohio State slid two spots into 11th place after this round. Twelve of the fifteen teams in the field shot higher scores in their 2nd round. The winds picked up to almost 20 mph, so it looked like almost everyone’s scores suffered. The Buckeyes were led by Tee-k and Caleb, both shooting 75 (+3) for their round. Clark contributed a 76 (+4) to the team score and Addison a 78 (+6). Grant shot a 79 (+7).

Tee-k had 2 birdies /1 double bogey. Caleb had some excitement in his 73 with 3 birdies /1 double bogey. Clark had even more excitement with 4 birdies / 1 double bogey. Addison was humming along very nicely at (+2) for the round through 16 holes, when the round went sideways for him. On the 17th hole, a 590 yard par-5 hole, a 9 showed up on his card. Ugh. However, he did rebound nicely to finish his round by parring #18. Grant did have a birdie, but also several bogeys. It looked like a round where not much clicked for him. However, if you have a “non-click” round and still shoot 79, that’s still some pretty decent shot making.

Third Round

The 3rd round didn’t go so well for the Buckeyes, since they shot a 310 (+22). The Buckeyes were led by Caleb Ramirez 72 (E). Everyone else had a tough day. Grant Weaver 78 (+6), and Tee-k Kelly and Addison Coll shot 80’s (+8) to contribute to the team score. Clark Engle shot an 81 (+9).

The Buckeyes started on the back 9 and played some interesting golf. I can describe it as a round of “streaks”. Clark was (+2) through 8 holes, then scored 3 consecutive double bogeys. Tee-k was (+1) through 9 holes, then played 3 consecutive holes in (+10). Addison played 7 consecutive holes, #1 through # 7, without scoring a par. He went; birdie, then 4 consecutive double bogeys, then back-to-back birdies. Caleb birdied 3 consecutive holes to shoot a great (-3) on his back nine.

Thoughts

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I felt the coaches are looking at different player combinations. Coach Moseley shook things up again by inserting freshman Caleb Ramirez into the lineup for the last event of the Fall schedule. The payoff for the team? Caleb was team medalist (low scorer) and was by far the best Buckeye on the course in the 3rd round. More on that, later. I’m guessing that Caleb had a very good week of practice to earn a spot into the lineup, or Coach Moseley figured “It’s last event of the Fall, let’s let The Kid tee it up.” Frankly, either rationale works for me. I’ll restate what I said in the previous recap; I think this team is loaded with good players, so regardless of who tees it up, the Buckeyes will be just fine.

Sifting through the chaff, here is a “what happened” snap-shot. They played the par 3’s okie-dokie, scoring an average of 3.21 strokes per hole, a total of +16 to par; good enough to rank 10th. They played the par 4’s to an average of 4.17 per hole, +21 to par, ranking them 15th. The team improved a bit in their par-4 scoring from last week, but it just wasn’t ‘up to par’ with their competitors this week. But, as long as they keep improving the raw scoring, it’ll work out. They played the par 5’s to an average of 4.83 per hole (an improvement from last week), a total of -12 to par, ranking 11th.

In terms of “to par” scoring, Ohio State recorded 150 pars (of 270 holes played), placing them in 13th position in that measure. They recorded 38 birdies, placing them 9th. They problem was they scored 93 bogeys; almost 1/3 of the holes played.

OK, now that I’m done with dry-ish stats, I have some other thoughts. The 3rd round was a little disconcerting to me.

OK, now that I’m done with dry-ish stats, I have some other thoughts. The 3rd round was a little disconcerting to me. The good, actually great, news is that Caleb Ramirez, in his first start, led the team in scoring by shooting an even par 72. The bad news was that he got no help from his upperclassman teammates. Three of his four teammates failed to break 80. In the final round, there were 6 players that failed to break 80; 3 of them were Buckeyes. That’s not good. At least coaches Moseley and Smith have a checklist to work on between now and March 2016. Of the 12 student-athletes on the OSU roster, 7 are freshmen/sophomore. The Spring schedule will go a long way to work out wrinkles of the upperclassmen and to provide development opportunity to the underclassmen. This is going to be fun.

The OSUMG team will tee it up again in competition March 6-8, 2016 in Auburn, AL. The event is the Tiger Invitational. I’m planning to have some mid-semester coverage over the next few months, so please check back in to tBBC.

Go Buckeyes!
