Game Thread Buffalo Bulls at tOSU, Aug 31, 12 ET, ESPN2

With the egg that SDSU is laying against Eastern Illinois, I hope we can get the problems ironed out that plagued today.

I didn't realize Corey Linsley was out for so long in the game. At least from watching the game, his departure seemed to really throw the offense off track...

TL;DR Ohio State & stochastic methods taught me that no team is likely to go undefeated.

My larger point is: it's a long season and team chemistry goes a LONG ways, so lets wait a few weeks before declaring "12-2 squad."

I didn't "declare" anything.

I said 12-2 is still in play.

I have been speaking in terms of the most likely outcome.

We can agree that first-game aberrations are common; and we cannot draw conclusions from them on which we would bet real money. We are agreed, I think, that "declaring" what is going to happen is unreasonable, but I am entitled to express an opinion.

And that is all I did. I expressed an opinion about what the most likely outcome is. To be clear, my opinion, at this point, is that they are unlikely to do better than a two loss season.

Or are you saying it's too early in the season to express an opinion?

There was a poll asking our opinions before a single game was played. You didn't register your complaint there, in spite of the fact that LJB quite eloquently predicted a 12-2 mark in that thread, so that must not be what you mean...

Or are you suggesting it's too early to say 2 losses are likely but it's NOT too early to say that a better record is more likely?

After THAT game?

Yeah, it was only a first game. But that brings us back to the point that people were predicting two losses when zero games had been played.

It's a message board

People are going to express opinions

A few things that I saw today...

1- The defensive tackles seemed very quiet. The ends played pretty decent, but the middle of the field (against the run) is going to be a big problem in the Big Ten if we don't toughen up inside against the run.

2- Our defense needs to attack 3/4 of the time they are out there. The corners play way too soft (dating back to last year) when they give a cushion.

3- Shazier is the most important player on our defense. He sets the tempo and seems to be in on every play directly or indirectly.

4- Braxton suffered from TP syndrome at times today, especially in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. What I mean by that is that you could tell he was trying, almost against his own will, to stay inside the pocket when his instincts probably were telling him to tuck and run. Too much thinking and not enough reacting.

5- Jordan Hall is an Urban Meyer guy. He just keeps his nose down and plays his ass off. In fact, I think he could eventually become the leader of this offense over the span of this season. If the Bucks want to be successful, they need Hall.

6- Wilson is going to be special. Obviously we can dwell on the fumble....but I choose to focus on the huge burst he provides when he touches the ball. All of the hype is warranted.

7- Most importantly, this season is not going to be as easy as some of the fan base expects. Try as we might, this team is not quite the "electric" squad that Meyer is known for. As the first quarter demonstrated, they have the potential. Meyer is trying to find the happy medium of a cocky team and a confident/competent team. If the former prevails, they struggle to play for a Big Ten title. If the latter prevails.....you have a late Tress era squad that can't get over the hump. The happy medium could find them a shot at winning it all. Buckle up, it's going to be a hell of a season.

Just a few thoughts that I had; I'm a bit tired, so perhaps I'll add to this list tomorrow....

My observations

On offense:
Quarterback: Braxton looked sharp especially early on, you could see all the work he put in. Took too many sacks although decker didn't help that. Only a few bad throws on the day (int to Mack and overthrowing smith
Guiton did a great job like always, when braxton was hampered by cramps. Offense didn't miss a beat.

RB: Hall did a great job in space like he always does and the o-line blew open some big holes on the left side on the 2 that he housed.
Wilson was as advertised just needs to get his touches in space (10-12 touches in my opinion)
Elliot looks impressive in stature and has great agility from what little we saw.

WR: The group as a whole was running wide open all over the place. Probably the most impressed with this groups improvement as a whole
Corey Brown just get progressively better every year in my opinion. He's electric on punt returns when he catches the ball.
Smith seemed more present in the short passing game and notched the typical big TD reception.
Spencher didn't get much thrown his way but he has also improved over last year.
Fields got open and made big plays today.

OL: Good job as a whole other than the spiratic play of Decker.
Decker at RT appears to be the only weak point here.

TE: not that much of a factor.

On Defense: inexperienced, missing roby and Barnett, reeves was inconsistent
D-line : buffalo's play calling made them a non factor a decent amount of the time and didn't get to the QB a lot.
Spence didn't have a bad game, grant's helmet penalty cost him a sack
Bosa is an absolute animal he reminds me a lot of j.j. Watt and almost caused an int if reeves didn't drop it.

LB: Shazier coming off the field hurt. Had some missed tackles and a missed coverage but you can't expect perfection out of inexperienced players
Grant missed some tackles and blew coverage on a crossing route. Other than that it wasn't too bad.
Johnson and perry did fine.

Secondary:Yes not having roby hurts. Would have liked to see some sort of rotation in for Reeves with apple bell or burrows.
Reeves was picked on all day, had a late hit penalty and dropped an int. Not a good day overall for Reeves with missed tackles.
Grant was impressive when thrown at.

Observations:

1). We were playing soft coverage b/c our AA Roby and captain safety Barnett weren't out there today. We didn't give up anything over the top. Mission accomplished.

2). Bosa is an animal. If he continues to emerge, we could see a lot of Spence-Bennett-Washington-Bosa in the nickel package. Was held repeatedly, but still forced a few bad throws.

3). Bell is an animal on special teams.

4). Hall is the kind of back that Urban likes to run the zone read with. Hyde will get carries when he's back, but it's not a guarantee that he'll earn the top spot back.

5). Braxton runs better when he's improvising, which means that he's either not reading the play correctly or is hesitant to run. His best game in this regard was probably PSU, and he's got to improve on that.

6). The potential is there with Wilson. He will be a larger factor with each passing game.

7). Not too much said about Curtis Grant, which means that he's making the plays he's suppose to make. That is a good thing.

Overall, the D played soft coverage and rarely showed any blitz packages. The O also played extremely conservative. Again, just silly to draw conclusions about the season based on this game.

The cramping issues are puzzling as I watched many games yesterday and saw few other examples of it. Can't recall a single one in Clemson/ Georgia game.
Of note yesterday was the play of two key back-ups.
Trey Johnson, a true freshman, had a solid game. Played for Shazier. Great news and unexpected!
Ron Tanner, was solid at safety.(for C.J. Barnett) Great news , also!
While Spence and Washington didn't have huge days, they were part of a solid effort.
Reeves, of course, got picked on a lot. He got beat on one TD but held up OK for a first start. He's our shortest corner and big receivers will get matched up on him all season.
I don't recall a single big play from the Buff offense. We seemed to lose enegy after Shazier went out. (he is an All American!)
Decker has much to learn but was matched up against an All American speed rusher. That was a real learning experience for him. Teams will obviously put fast guys against him all season.
The offensive line created some great holes for Hall to run through! Boren, playing for Linsley held his own but is not as good, yet.

Yep, it's official, they dropped into Tressel Ball, as many have observed:

http://buckeyextra.dispatch.com/con...falo-ohio-state/ohio-state-football-game.html
“We had three drives that were pretty close to disastrous there,” Herman said, “so we said, ‘Let’s settle everybody down and hand the ball off a little bit.’ That probably was not the right direction to take because that’s not what the defense was giving us. I felt I got a little conservative, and it really wasn’t the way to attack these guys with what they were doing up front.”

We're probably not going to see Clowney, maybe not even another Mack. And Decker will get better.
It's all about match-ups.
A big thing is the lack of big plays from Buffalo's offense. And special teams, also.
No special teams issues today! No blocked punts! No long returns from Buffalo!
LBer is still the big issue going forward. Maybe it will take a few games to improve. Maybe it won't all season. The development of Trey Johnson and Mitchell going forward is key.
Corey Brown didn't get thrown to enough.
Evan Spencer had cramp issues.
Josh Perry had cramps.
TEs were "helping" with Mack.
I love Braxton's improvement in the pass game. Back shoulder for most of his passes! He still runs around a little too much trying to make plays and losing yards instead of bailing. But that's probably being picky for a guy who is a wonderful talent and used to being the whole offense.
Brax looked like a complete QB in this game. Standing in the pocket and making great decisions. And when he saw the need, running. His running highlighted his great vision as a runner. Maybe his biggest asset. He was still making running plays after having cramping issues.
Brax is a very, very special player. He may not win a Heisman but he will have left us with many awesome memories!
And lastly, let's give all praise to Kenny G. for being probably the best backup QB in college football!

After the first time I saw Hall run the ball yesterday I was thinking to myself "my God, Hall looks like he's really bulked up this year."

I agree..rewatched the first 16 plays ..I wonder if Boren had us in the right line calls...plus we got vanilla according to Herman
