Great place to raise a family, great food, decent culture and nightlife, lots of nice neighborhoods with good people and options for schools. Skiing and the Lake are very close. But yeah, the Bills do suck.

My son lived in Buffalo for 4 years. I visited him maybe 8 times during that period. Based on an unscientific poll of myself, that city is pretty close to the bottom of the list of places to live.

Why? It is listed as a top ten place to raise a family. What sucks. Thats what I need to know.

I grew up in the rust belt. Is it worse than Chicago, Toledo, Detroit or Cleveland?

Coming from someone who spent the first part of their life in upstate New York (Syracuse), avoid it if possible.

It's not a terrible place (certainly not compared to Detroit), but the winters are long, brutal, and depressing. I have extended family in Buffalo and they're reasonably happy but I would only move there if I had one hell of a reason.

Basing this solely on the appearance of the city on the drive through Buffalo along 190: Is "shithole" one word or two?

Basing this solely on the appearance of the city around the west/north side of the city, along 290: It looks nice. I don't think anything sticks out in my memory of the drive, which is probably a good thing.

Years ago I worked with a guy from Buffalo. He had immense pride in the city and his hometown. It bordered on obnoxious.

From what I read about the city, it strikes me as a town that is on its way back up. Never in decline but just stagnant with development.

Until the union controlled states realize that ultra high taxes make it prohibitive to work and live in their region, the Brain drain will continue. Sorry, just bitter about some labor negotiations.

But seriously, how can state leadership think that an income tax rate of 7.65% and a sales tax rate of 8.75% can compete with states with no income taxes and equal or lower sales taxes? Its insane. The midwest and northeast will continue to bleed population until they figure this out.

I want to move back to the Great Lakes but rant over. Back to living in hillbilly land.

Come to NH. We have neither of those taxes, just a bitch of a property tax. Plenty of big lakes and hunting too.
