Sheeeeeeeeeeeit!
I am currently in the market for a handgun. I've shot guns with some friends and I really enjoyed it. I'm not necessarily interested in the protection aspect of buying a handgun (although that is a benefit), I just found that firing a gun is a great way to relieve some stress. I'm not that knowledgeable on the different types or the pros & cons on the different calibers. I currently own a S&W revolver which I inherited from my grandfather when he passed away so I want a semi-automatic. I'm currently leaning towards a Glock G23 (.40 cal), but didn't know if I should be looking at 9mm. Any suggestions?

I own a Smith & Wesson .357 and it's a BEAUTIFUL gun. I prefer it over pretty much any firearm you can come across. Simple to clean, simple to maintain, doesn't jam, and makes you look like a cowboy. I keep it for protection.. i figure if I ever need more than 6 shots, something went wrong anyhow.

If you want light, comfortable, and easy to conceal/carry this is your gun right here. Barely half a pound, and still reliable:

I own one of these though I don't carry it much (I love my .357 too much). I've heard some people have problems with this one (jamming and seating issues) but mine's worked fine through ~500 rounds.

However, if price isn't an issue and you want a big caliber bullet, I have to recommend a p220 model from sig sauer. It shoots a .45. If the zombie apocalypse comes (and it will) this is the sidearm I'd want, the p220 combat:

Sig also makes really nice 9MMs and .40 cals... if I get another semi-auto it's going to be a Sig. Hopefully I can afford to drop 3k on a gun one day and it'll be this one:

6-inch barrel ftw.

If your primary goal is plinking then ammo costs should definitely be something you look into.

9mm is going to be cheaper than just about every other common handgun cartridge.

From a personal protection standpoint, a friend of mine (cop) suggested a S&W revolver, specifically mentioning something like the 642 because it's reliable and small. Any thoughts? This would mainly be something I keep in the house, just in case something would ever happen (or any time I venture over to North Linden).

The new SIG SAUER P250

Look at this!! They have a modular system that is like Transformers for guns.

I'm gonna wait a year or so for the first run bugs to get worked out, but it looks like a good investment, and you can go compact for conceal carry and then back to full size and full clip for the range...or even change from 9mm for cheap practice brass to .45 for home defense.

Kuhl!!
