Charlotte Bobcats? Byron Mullens rebounds, thanks to fresh legs

The word you keep hearing about Byron Mullens is ?fresh.?

Fresh, primarily as in rested from six weeks off with an ankle sprain. But also fresh as in reinvented.

This is a guy who showed up in Charlotte last season as the world?s tallest shooting guard. Then Monday night, with a career-high 18 rebounds, he looked like something else entirely in a victory over the Boston Celtics.

?He put his nose in there a lot,? coach Mike Dunlap said of Mullens? rebounding. ?He?s been accused of not being a blood-and-guts kind of guy.?

With good cause; over his first three NBA seasons, 7-footer Mullens averaged just four rebounds a game. If the ball didn?t fall into his hands, somebody else probably got it.

Compare that to the five games he?s played since returning from the ankle sprain: He grabbed 49 rebounds, nearly 10 per game. Twelve of those came against the Los Angeles Lakers and center Dwight Howard. The 18 Monday night were primarily against Boston?s Kevin Garnett.

?I told everybody I?d be so much faster because of fresh legs,? Mullens described Tuesday.

Mullens wouldn?t recommend a sprain that swelled his left ankle to softball size. But he and Dunlap both say Mullens used his time off well. He worked hard with strength-and-conditioning coach Matt Friia and spent hours breaking down video with the assistant coaches.

How do you get in better shape with a bad ankle?

?I got in the pool a lot and ran,? Mullens said. ?And a lot of quick-lifting ? light weights but heavy reps. Speed stuff to get the heart rate up. A lot of mountain climbs.?

Improving Bobcats C Byron Mullens proving he can score, now wants to show he can rebound, too

Published February 18, 2013

Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? Byron Mullens is proving he can be a consistent scorer in the NBA.

Now the Bobcats 7-foot center is looking to take other aspects of his game to the next level when Charlotte opens the second half of the NBA season Tuesday night at the Orlando Magic.

"I just have to show the league and our organization that I can rebound," Mullens said.

The fourth-year NBA pro averaged 17.8 points per game ? five points above his season average ? in the six games leading up to the All-Star break.

Even more encouraging for coach Mike Dunlap is Mullens' increased production on the boards, averaging 8.6 rebounds per game during that stretch. That was highlighted by a 25-point, 18-rebound performance in a win last week against the Boston Celtics.

The solid six-game stretch for Mullens comes after missing 19 games with a foot injury.

He admits being the beneficiary of "fresh legs" when other NBA players were beginning to tire before the All-Star game.

But he's also feeling more comfortable in his second season of full action. He sat for two years in Oklahoma City, rarely seeing the floor before being traded last season for a second-round draft pick.

It's turned out to be a solid trade for the Bobcats.

"I've come a long way," Mullens said. "I had that first year under my belt playing last year. I've been in the league four years now but last year was like my first year so I just got my feet wet."

Mullens is far from a finished product.

PORTLAND, Ore. Charlotte Bobcats power forward Byron Mullens has a sore right knee that caused coach Mike Dunlap to sit him for all but the first three minutes of Monday's 122-104 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. Mullens said post-game he does not consider the injury a long-term concern. However, it limited his mobility, which caused Dunlap to shut him down quickly in Monday's game.

"It was sort of buckling. I could tell in warm-ups,'' Mullens said. "I couldn't get a good warm-up in because it felt weak. It led over to the game and I couldn't move that well, couldn't cut off of it.

"Coach made a decision to take me out. I never asked to come out.''

In Mullens' absence, Jeff Adrien started the second half and Josh McRoberts got 23 minutes. He finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

"I do think it was the smart thing to do -- come out, rest it,'' said Mullens, who will be a restricted free agent this summer. "At this point in the season, rest it another day. I'll get some stim (electric stimulation) and ice, and I'll be fine.''

Byron Mullens (ankle) is going to see a doctor on Thursday and could be shut down for the season.
It's the same (left) ankle that Mullens suffered a severe sprain to earlier in the season. Mullens has missed four straight games with the injury and it wouldn't be a surprise if the team simply shut him down. Josh McRoberts is locked into the starting power forward spot regardless of Mullens' health. Apr 4

The Bobcats will not extend a qualifying offer to Byron Mullens, according to Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer.
He'll become an unrestricted free agent. Mullens had a disappearing act down the stretch and received multiple DNP-CDs in April. The Bobcats clearly had the worst frontcourt in the NBA last season and Mullens' days as a starter in the NBA are probably kaput. He can provide some nice depth to most teams as a guy that can stretch the floor and should receive interest as a backup power forward or center. Jun 28

Charlotte Bobcats won?t make Byron Mullens a qualifying offer

The Charlotte Bobcats won?t make a qualifying offer of about $4 million to Byron Mullens, giving up their option to match any other team?s offer to the 7-foot forward-center.

With Cody Zeller moving into the Charlotte Bobcats? lineup, Byron Mullens might be out.

The Bobcats won?t make a qualifying offer of about $4 million to Mullens to restrict his free-agency this summer, according to president of basketball operations Rod Higgins. That means the team is giving up its option to match any other team?s offer to the 7-foot forward-center, who spent the past two seasons in Charlotte.

Charlotte will extend a qualifying offer to shooting guard Gerald Henderson, Higgins said.

With Zeller having similar ?stretch 4?? qualities at power forward ? meaning shooting range out to the 3-point line ? re-signing Mullens became less of a priority. Mullens averaged 10.6 points and 6.4 rebounds last season, starting half the team?s 82 games.

The Bobcats? decision doesn?t preclude them from re-signing Mullens, but now Mullens can treat the Bobcats like any of the other 29 teams in his search for a second NBA contract.

Acquired in a 2011 trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Mullens started strong last season before suffering a severe ankle sprain in late December. He missed about a month, then never quite regained his form.

The Bobcats made a February trade for power forward Josh McRoberts, who beat out Mullens for the starting job late in the season. McRoberts is an unrestricted free agent, and said money ? wherever that leads him ? was his priority in choosing a team.
