C Daniel Giddens (transfer to Alabama, transfer to Vermont)

Daniel looks like he has improved his offensive game a lot this year compared to what I saw of him last year. Anyone that has seen more film of him or has seen him live: How is his range?

It would be nice to have a big in the program that can shoot beyond 5 feet from the hoop. Lee has a decent stroke but when he is in there we need him under the basket for rebounding with our undersized lineup. He doesn't venture away from the bucket too frequently and attempt very many jump shots.

Our offense has been at its best under Matta when we've had a guy in the post that can score. Sully was capable of stepping away from the basket, but surrounding a low post threat with shooters on the perimeter seems to have the most success, so I'd really like Giddens to hone his back to the basket skills. If you want to keep the lane open, you can always use him on pick and roll situations as he'll be very effective in that role with his athleticism. Another benefit I think Giddens brings is that on the defensive end, he can guard on the block and is athletic enough to handle the pick and roll on the perimeter and guard bigs that want to shoot threes. I think Thompson will have that same ability, so at least from a defensive perspective, I think we are in good shape with our bigs for the next few years.

While I agree that Daniel's athleticism will pay major dividends for him at the college level, I don't believe Daniel has prototypical C size, which may hurt defensively against certain opponents, and of course he is not a great scorer either. Maybe he will improve as a scorer with time, but I still worry about the team not having a center with any real girth. Daniel is in terrific shape and well-built muscle-wise already, and he is still a little light weight-wise for the C position at the college level. The team needs to have a big burly C, 6'9" or 6'10" and 250 at least, before I'd feel the team is in great shape at that spot moving forward. I do believe Daniel will be a solid player for OSU, just seems to me that he isn't perfectly suited to being a starting center in college.

He hasn't shown anything outside of 5 ft really. If his free throw form is any indication, I doubt he has a good jump shot.

What are you basing this off of? He's 6-10, 240. Amir is 6-11, 250. He's the perfect size for a starting center in college. Besides Trevor Thompson will be there next year as well as Dave Bell. May the best big man be the starting C.

If he is that big, which I am skeptical of, he doesn't play like it from what I've seen. Plays more like 6'9" 230# - in other words he doesn't look like he has perfect size for a starting C in college. He appears to have an unusually tall neck.

Giddens does appear to have low shoulders. I've proclaimed for years that height is overstated in measuring a players "basketball" size. How high you can reach (as well as wingspan) is much more important than how far the top of your head is from the floor.

I do think Giddens will be absolutely fine at C. Heck, even if he's 230 right now, he can easily add another 10 lbs by next fall. He can run, jump and has pretty good hands. I think he also has a pretty good feel for the game of basketball which tells me that his improvement should be greater than some bigs we've seen lately. I just don't put too high an expectation in year 1.

Yeah, he has some good tools which can work well against many teams, and the majority of the B1G. But from the perspective of what does OSU need to compete against the national powers, they need a guy who can dominate the paint all by himself in order to offset the natural disadvantage of the 4-1 system when it goes against the more traditional power frontcourts (which aren't very many but bluebloods like KU, UNC and KY love to load up in the frontcourt).
