2024 CA OL Brandon Baker (Texas Verbal)

I can’t think of a single Mater Dei grad that came to Ohio state. None on current roster I went back through 2018 class and none. Wyatt Davis and Kourt Williams both went to Bosco

Nicky Sualua was the last back in 1993. He was the FB in the Eddie George era.

Mater Dei fullback Nicky Sualua said Wednesday he has committed to play football at Ohio State because he was “looking forward to the challenge of playing in the Big Eight.”

Right school. Wrong conference.

This recruitment is 1000% about NIL: whether Ohio State is willing to match Texas’ number and how much that matters to Baker and his family one way or the other.

Hm, he could always look at Paris Johnson’s rookie contract and the extension he could land but hey what do I know. (I know I know very little) but still. Even if we don’t match the volume of drafted tackles amongst both schools over the par what, 5-8 seasons can’t be that close.

But the game done changed; this is a big opportunity for Frye.

Flipside of that is "I am going to get drafted no matter where I go, so who is going to pay me the most over the next 3 years?"

This would be an enormous win for Frye and frankly one that we brought him in for (not specifically, but a highly ranked OL in Frye's stomping grounds). If he can pull this one off (and/or Seaton), then add that up to the Simmons and Cutler portal pickups and Frye is looking pretty darn good in recovering for Stud. I like the Ohio OL we have brought in and Moore from Indiana was a great land. But you have to occasionally pick up an elite guy like Baker from outside the Midwest.

But I do think NIL is going to be a huge component here and we better use the war chest for Baker. He is by far the most important prospect left and perhaps the biggest in the class (Houston being right there). We land Baker and whatever else happens with the '24 class I am good with...I know there are targets still to go after at OL/DL/DB, but we will have addressed the major areas of need if Baker comes to Columbus.

Maybe he should talk to Route Man Marv then?

I guess if he thinks MHJ wouldn't be a first round pick unless he went to OSU.

I think all the people who go on about taking less NIL money and betting on the big NFL pay day either don't understand the time value of money concept or are just being incredibly disingenuous with the advice to kids.

Before it was ok to get paid, the narrative was to "get your degree so you have something to fall back on because you never know with the NFL." Now it's "take less money now, so you have less to fall back on because we can make you more NFL money"

What's changed? Why is the NFL a thing to bet on now where before it was just a nice to have and the education was what mattered most?

From where I sit, the only constant is coaches and fans of a program creating a self serving narrative that makes them feel like their school is the best choice for a kid while giving two shits if that narrative is true or if their school is actually better for the kid.

Until we have, if we ever do, the math of the difference in NIL money one place offered vs another we really have no idea of what the kid would be risking to be better developed one place vs another.

Let me be more clear. I said just a few posts ago to turn up tne heat. Back up the truck is what I mean.

I just want Marv's message too.

Why not compete with cash as much as possible AND show the NFL path is real like being a #6 overall pick like Paris just got.

I want a 2 prong approach.
