Cajun Microwaves, anyone cook with one of these?

I'm thinking about building a cajun microwave as an alternative to smoking/grilling and for Buckeye tailgates next season. Has anyone here every used or built one?

If you're not familiar here's a fancy one. Basically the outside is a cedar (typically) box with the inside lined in aluminum or stainless steel. The top features a steel tray where you put the coal/wood. The heat raidiates into the box where it slow roasts anything from whole hogs (on the bigger units) to basically anything you cook in an oven. I'd build one about this size for things like pork shoulders, turkeys, briskets, etc. It will cook much faster than a smoker (eg a whole hog can be done in 4-6 hours because the heat reflects from all sides). The skin will be crisper and the inside generally more moist.

You can also add a grill grate above the coals for cooking on direct heat like any other type of grill.

Here's one that's more of a home made version:

If I was making a homemade grill, I am thinking it might be best to not make it out of wood.

It's not really a grill and Cedar is more resistent to heat than most woods. Also the interior temp shouldn't go over 350 (which is lined with aluminum or steel. Additionally the fire is on top of the grill, not inside.

These things are supposed to be pretty awesome to cook with.

Do you own a TIG welder?

I shouldn't need a welder for the simple plans I'm looking at, simply rivets and overlaying the corners with the aluminum or steel. I'd probably find the steel basket for the fire first and design the box around that.

Not far off. I just like the idea of being able to take that to a football game, cook a pork shoulder in about 5-6 hours, grill some brats or chicken on top and drink while keeping warm by the fire.

Do you get any smoke flavor from these things? It basically sounds like a semi-portable oven. The smoke is what makes smoked pork shoulder so great, though!

don't know, but i'd be willing to bet with a little "coonass engineering" you could modify to let smoke in.
