MIAMI — Antone Smith proved he deserved Florida's Mr. Football award Sunday night, as he was named MVP of the Florida all-star team that beat California's top high school players 24-22 in the CaliFlorida Bowl at the Orange Bowl.

Smith, who led Pahokee to its second straight Class 2B state championship last month, scored on an 18-yard run in the second quarter to put Florida ahead 14-7, a lead it would not relinquish.

He finished with 43 yards on 12 carries.

Florida now leads the CaliFlorida Bowl series 4-2, and has won its second game in a row.

Glade Central's Randy Phillips also played in the game, tallying four tackles on defense.

Both offenses were impressive early, each scoring on its first drive. California scored first, when quarterback Mark Sanchez, the No. 1-rated passer in the country who has committed to Southern California, scrambled to his right and found receiver Gavin Ketchum on the goal line for an 8-yard touchdown.

Florida responded on the next drive, with help from Smith, who caught a 13-yard pass Florida's opening drive, dragging several defenders behind him. Running back Kalvin Bailey, of Seffner-Armwood, scored a 2-yard touchdown several plays later. Florida kicker Graham Gano, of Pensacola-Tate, missed the extra point, leaving California with a 7-6 lead.

Florida also picked up a touchdown from Miami-Killian's Demetrice Morley, who ran back the opening kickoff of the second half.

Both defenses dominated much of the rest of the game, with either offense turning over the ball and failing to drive much beyond midfield.

Florida intercepted Sanchez and Derek Shaw — who has committed to Miami — twice each. Florida defensive back Clarence Ward of Pensacola returned a Sanchez interception 51 yards to the California 37-yard line, which set up Smith's touchdown run.

But the biggest defensive play came on the final play.

California drove down the field to score a touchdown with two seconds remaining to pull within 24-22. On the two-point conversion, Florida's defense stuffed the California running back as time expired.

Sunday's game marked the first time the contest has been held in Florida, moved to Miami to coincide with Tuesday's Orange Bowl.

MIAMI · Pahokee's Antone Smith scored on an 18-yard run, and Plantation's Jeff Owens used the game to commit to Georgia as the Florida high school all-stars downed California 24-22 Sunday night in the sixth annual CaliFlorida Bowl at the Orange Bowl.

California closed within 24-22 on a 7-yard scoring toss from USC-bound Mark Sanchez to Lydell Sargeant on the game's final play. Florida's Eugene Hayes tackled Sargeant for a 3-yard loss on the two-point conversion attempt to deny California.

"This has been a great experience because you have a chance to meet new players," said Owens, a two-time South Florida Sun-Sentinel first-team All-County selection at defensive tackle. "I loved this. I wouldn't take it back for the world. We had to bring our A game and prove to everyone that Florida has the best football in the country.

"This game right here proves that it can break you or make you," Owens said. "If I can dominate here, I can dominate at the next level. I felt comfortable [at Georgia] and I loved the atmosphere."

California made it look easy on its first drive and took a 7-0 lead as Sanchez found Gavin Ketchum for a 10-yard score. Sargeant did most of the damage on the drive, carrying three times for 70 yards. He finished with 12 carries for 124 yards and five catches for 48 yards.

Florida answered on its first possession as Seffner-Armwood's Kalvin Bailey, an Iowa commitment, capped an 11-play, 67-yard drive with a 2-yard run with 9:44 remaining in the first quarter, and then took a 14-7 lead on an 18-yard run by Smith with 9:10 remaining in the first half. Smith finished with 43 yards on 12 carries and caught one pass for 13 yards.

The 5-foot-8, 180-pound Smith, who scored 78 touchdowns in his high school career, broke four tackles and swept around left end for the score. Harrison Beck hit Fred Rouse for the two-point conversion.

Troy Van Blarcom, who also has orally committed to USC, pulled California to within 14-10 on a 27-yard field goal with 2 seconds remaining in the first half. Van Blarcom missed a 52-yarder into the wind earlier in the second quarter.

Miami Killian's Demetrice Morley returned the second-half kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown for Florida and Graham Gano added a 50-yard field goal. California's first second-half points came on a 68-yard scoring toss from Sanchez to Desean Jackson.

Dillard linebacker Elijah Hodge, who has orally committed to Wisconsin, had a fourth-quarter interception and finished with three tackles.

"To be the best, you have to play against the best," Hodge said. "People always want to know who has the best football state and we wanted to show them that it is Florida. You come out to compete. If you lose, you have to take it as a man. You play high school, then all-star games and college. This is just another step in the chapter."

Among All-Stars, locals shine

Carol City defensive end Ricky Jean-Francois and Killian cornerback Demetrice Morley were foes when their teams met more than a month ago in a state semifinal playoff game.

Sunday night, they were teammates and as big a reason as any Florida left the Orange Bowl with a thrilling 24-22 victory against California in the sixth annual CaliFlorida Bowl.

Morley, a USA Today All-American, wowed a national TV audience when he returned the opening kickoff of the second half 86 yards for a touchdown.

''Anytime I get the ball in my hands, I feel like I can do something special with it,'' said Morley, who spun off two tackles and outran a California player across the field to the end zone on the return. ``The end zone was calling my name. I had to make it there.''

In the end, Jean-Francois came up with perhaps the biggest play of all when he stopped California running back Lydell Sargeant 4 yards from the end zone on a two-point conversion run with no time remaining to preserve the victory.

Florida's defense intercepted four passes, including two off Mission Viejo quarterback Mark Sanchez, considered the nation's top high school quarterback by many.

Sanchez, a USC commitment, threw for 234 yards and three scores -- including a 7-yarder to Sargeant as time expired to rally California to within two points of a tie. But instead of keeping the ball in Sanchez's hands, California coach Pete Duffy tried to surprise Florida with the run.

Jean-Francois didn't bite.

''They were trying to run the stretch out of a passing formation,'' said Jean-Francois, who also had a sack and four tackles. ``All I was trying to do was buy some time for my linebackers and make sure he didn't get loose. The whole week we've been loving like a family. I couldn't let the family down.''

Pahokee running back Antone Smith, who was awarded the state's Mr. Football Award last month after leading his team to a second consecutive state title, earned MVP honors for Florida even though he was outgained by Sargeant, who was named California's MVP.

Smith, who had a crowd of Pahokee fans in attendance cheering him on, broke six tackles on an amazing 18-yard touchdown run to give Florida a 14-7 lead with 9:10 remaining in the first half. He finished with 43 yards rushing on 12 attempts and a 13-yard catch.

Afterward, with TV cameras in his face, he played coy about his future college choice.

''Seriously, this stadium is pretty nice, and South Beach is off the chain,'' Smith said. ``I'm not going to announce anything yet. Right now, I'm going to enjoy this win. As far as the MVP, our defense deserved this award, not me.''

Orlando Edgewater cornerback Tyller Roberts, a player who was a late addition to Florida's roster, would have been a strong candidate. Roberts intercepted Sanchez twice and broke up two passes.

Dillard linebacker Elijah Hodge picked off a pass and finished with three tackles. Lakeland defensive tackle Kendrick Stewart finished with two sacks, five tackles and the best Florida celebration of the night.

After sacking California backup Derek Shaw in the third quarter, Stewart brought the sparse crowd to its feet when he went head over heels with back-to-back flips.

California outgained Florida 381 to 201, but in the end the big plays on defense and the return by Morley proved to be the difference.

''I thought our defense and that kickoff return by Morley gave us a big edge in the second half,'' Florida coach Dave Wilson said. ``These kids were a great pleasure to be around all week. It was definitely a dream team.''
