GlenOak at Fitch

SITE Falcon Stadium, 7:30 p.m.

RECORDS GlenOak 4-4, 2-3; Fitch 3-5, 2-3.

LAST WEEK GlenOak 31, Boardman 7; Fitch 16, Lake 7.

LAST MEETING GlenOak won 26-6 last year.
WHAT TO WATCH Two playoff teams from a year ago look to build on wins last week and finish strong. GlenOak mixed the run and pass well a week ago, leading to positive results. Senior QB Mike Hartline went 13-for-18 passing for 161 yards with a TD and no interceptions. Brian McNew caught the TD among his six receptions for 90 yards. The Golden Eagles produced 189 rushing yards on 39 carries. Kevin Pratt led the way with 89 yards on 19 attempts. Fitch did what it loves to do the most, run the ball, in last week’s win. The Falcons churned out 270 yards on 61 carries, as they picked up 21 first downs. They also had no turnovers, and that enabled them to control the ball and the game. Fitch ran 70 offensive plays to Lake’s 37. Fitch’s Taylor Edwards and J.J. Pankewicz each rushed for more than 100 yards against Lake.

GlenOak at Perry

SITE Perry High Stadium, 7:30 p.m.

RECORDS GlenOak 4-5, 2-4; Perry 3-6, 2-4.

LAST WEEK Fitch 22, GlenOak 14; Lake 20, Perry 0.

LAST MEETING GlenOak won 24-17 last year.
WHAT TO WATCH These teams have been up and down all year. Perry is coming off a disappointing loss last week, and GlenOak got stung by Fitch. This will be the final high school game for Golden Eagle QB Mike Hartline, so look for him to play well. Hartline has been GlenOak’s best offensive threat. OT Ryan Palmer should play inspired as well. He verbally committed to Illinois this week. Perry will have to sustain drives. The Panthers did not score against Lake, and that has been a recurring theme this season: Inconsistency. Look for the Panthers to play physical football and try to establish that tone early. GlenOak’s defense will have to get itself off the field, and teams have been able to run the ball against them. This is a chance for Perry to end the season on a positive note and a chance for GlenOak to finish with a non-losing record.

FEDERAL roundup: Perry rolls past GlenOak in finale

Saturday, October 29, 2005

PERRY TWP. - Mike Fach may not be able to use football to fund a free college education.

But what he has gotten from the game is priceless.

Perry High’s 5-foot-9, 135-pound senior intercepted two passes, recovered a fumble and flawlessly directed the Panthers offense Friday night in a 35-6 victory over GlenOak.

“The coaches told us all week that the last football game you play is the one you’ll remember the rest of your life,” Fach said. “I’ll have some pretty good memories.”

So will the rest of the senior Panthers, especially those who helped force eight turnovers (five fumbles, three interceptions) and a partially blocked punt that led directly to three Perry touchdowns.

“I’m so happy for our seniors, but it’s also hard because I’m going to miss them,” Perry coach John “Spider” Miller said. “They gave us everything they had.”

Tony DiCicco rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Fach completed four of his first five passes for 74 yards before the Panthers adopted a more conservative attack in the second half.

Both teams finished 4-6 overall. Perry was 3-4 in the Federal League, GlenOak 2-5. It was just the second losing season for the Golden Eagles in seven years under coach Jack Rose.

Perry’s defense limited GlenOak to 154 yards of offense. Eagles quarterback Mike Hartline was 10-for-20 for 104 yards and was picked off twice by Fach and once by Ryan Clokey.

“Too many turnovers,” Rose said. “Perry just played Perry football. You know what they’re going to line up and do. But we didn’t take good care of the football.”

Tom Straughn recovered two fumbles for Perry. Fach, Clokey and Patrick Steiner had one fumble recovery apiece.

Aaron Morris scored from a yard away to cap a 79-yard drive the first time Perry touched the ball. The Eagles stayed close (14-6) until late in the third quarter, when a Perry defender got a hand on a GlenOak punt. The ball died just 21 yards away, on the Eagles’ 44. Seven plays later, DiCicco danced down the right sideline for a 25-yard TD that widened the gap to 21-6 with 3:03 remaining in the quarter.

Perry iced the victory with TDs by DiCicco and Clokey on its first two possessions of the fourth quarter. Those drives followed a Josh Mayes sack and Clokey’s interception.

“Our defense did a good job of mixing coverages,” said Miller, whose team accumulated 311 yards of total offense. “Everything was clicking. It was just our night.”

And, for Fach, it was a night to remember. It also was a night he hoped would encourage his younger teammates, those still looking ahead toward nights of memories.

“This is a win we can build off of,” Fach said. “It won’t be long before Perry football will be back to what it was.” Reach Repository sports writer Andy Call at (330) 580-8346 or e-mail [email protected]

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

PLAIN TWP. With more than 20 years as head coach, a state title and 132 wins, Jack Rose may have Ohio High School Hall of Fame coaching credentials.

Now he wants to make sure there are no doubts about his Hall of Fame dad credentials.

GlenOak's veteran football coach turned in a letter of resignation Friday to Plain Local Superintendent Christopher Smith and informed his players Monday afternoon that he was resigning as the team's head coach. Rose, who has three sons, has spent the last eight seasons at GlenOak.
