West Branch at Canton South

SITE Brechbuhler Stadium, 7:30 p.m.

RECORDS West Branch 4-4, 2-3; Canton South 3-5, 1-4.

LAST WEEK Louisville 48, West Branch 6; Northwest 28, Canton South 7.

LAST MEETING West Branch won 21-7 last year.
WHAT TO WATCH West Branch is hanging on for its playoff life, ninth in Division III, Region 11. Even with wins over South on Friday and Marlington next week, the Warriors might need help to get in. The good news is senior RB Scott Thomas may be ready to return. Thomas, who has 304 yards on 30 carries, dressed last week for the first time in a month, though he had not yet received a doctor’s clearance to play. Thomas’ return would give the Warriors a strong second option to RB Eric Balputnis as teams have spent the last four weeks keying on the 6-foot, 200-pound senior. South’s defense shut out a state-ranked Tusky Valley team in its opener but has been giving up an average of 23 points in five conference games. The Wildcats had hoped to contend in the NBC, but now must win their final two game just to finish .500. After a slow start, junior RB Devon Torrence has climbed to third in the county with 88 points, including 14 TDs.

Canton South at Carrollton

SITE Community Field, 7:30 p.m.

RECORDS Canton South 4-5, 2-4; Carrollton 6-3, 4-2.

LAST WEEK Canton South 41, West Branch 26; Louisville 27; Carrollton 6.

LAST MEETING Carrollton won 26-13 last year.
WHAT TO WATCH The Wildcats broke out last week as junior TB Devon Torrence ran for 155 yards and three TDs, and senior TB Tony Ash had 145 yards and three TDs on just six carries. That opened space for South’s passing game, as senior QB Ronnie May was an efficient 4-of-7 for 86 yards, including a 50-yard TD with Torrence. More importantly, South didn’t turn the ball over. Despite giving up 26 fourth-quarter points to West Branch, South’s defense has played well. That unit is led by sophomore LB Devoe Torrence (117 tackles), senior DT Jeff Hughes (97 tackles) and senior LB Raphael Johnson (94 tackles). A win would leave South with the same record as last season. Barring a huge collapse by teams in front of them in Division III, Region 11, the Warriors’ season will end after Week 10. Junior TB Drew DeSimone has provided a second-half spark, rushing for 503 yards and eight TDs. He also has nine interceptions. Junior QB Matt Bryan eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark for passing last week. Senior WRs Corey Leggett, Matt Spears and Nick Castellucci will look to make their last game memorable.

Just figured i'd make a post in here about the coaching switch. Coach Schuetz was fired and Coach Daniska the former defensive coordinator. He's switching the offense to the spread. We are keeping the same defense(3-5-3) Devon will be used switching from reciever and HB throughout the game. I excpect J'keem and Devoe to rotate at HB and maybe have both out at the same time at RB. We also have a quarterback who will be a sophmore and he should be starting. His name is Matt Trissel and he has a canon for an arm. watch out for him.

Canton South?s A.J. McAbier sacks Louisville quarterback Ben Schmucker in the second quarter Friday at Louisville. South went on to win, 27-21, in overtime ? ending a seven-game Wildcat losing streak in the series. BOB ROSSITER

LOUISVILLE - It was hard to tell if sweat or tears streaked the faces of the Canton South Wildcats on Friday night.
Devon Torrence, hobbling on crutches, embraced younger brother Devoe, who wiped his eyes as he limped off the field. South assistant Eric Frazee hugged senior Terrance Evans and said, ?Thank you.?
Just another chapter in the South-Louisville high school football rivalry.
The Wildcats ended a seven-year losing streak to Louisville and atoned for last year?s devastating overtime loss to the Leopards with a 27-21 overtime win at Louisville Stadium, the same score as last year.
Evans sealed the win when he picked up Devoe Torrence?s fumble at the 4 and ran it in for the touchdown in OT, sparking an emotional celebration that Wildcat fans have been waiting on for a long time.
?I was so scared. I didn?t want them to get the ball,? Evans said. ?I was about to dive on it, but it bounced up into my hands, so I ran it in.?
?That?s the fumble-rooski, the modern version,? South coach Moe Daniska said with a laugh. ?No, that?s not how we draw it up. You know, they made a couple plays last year in the fourth quarter and overtime that got them the win. (Tonight) our kids hung tough, like Canton South kids do, and we made a play at the end.?
South improves to 4-2 overall, 2-1 in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference, a game back of first-place Alliance.
Louisville coach Paul Farrah looked back to the first half for his team?s demise. QB Ben Schumucker ran 71 yards for a TD on the Leopards? (2-4, 1-2) third play from scrimmage, but that was it.
Despite frequent good field position, the Leopards never added to their lead in the first half. Evans came up with a key stop on fourth down at the Louisville 19, and, on the next play, South QB Matt Trissel hit Devon Torrence on an 81-yard TD pass to tie it at 7-7 with 3:24 left in the half.
?We left way too many points on the board in the first half,? Farrah said. ?We dominated but didn?t score. We knew they had the ability to break off that one big play, and they did.?
South capitalized on Josh Neff?s fumble recovery midway through the third when Devoe Torrence took the shot gun snap and ran it in from the 1 for a 14-7 Wildcat lead.
After the teams traded punts, Louisville responded with a 6-play, 41-yard drive that ended with Schmucker?s 13-yard TD run. The senior captain finished with 179 yards rushing.
South?s answer took two plays: A 28-yard run by Devoe Torrence and a 39-yard TD run by J?Keem Waters, who finished with 98 yards rushing.
Louisville staggered, but didn?t go down. The Leopards put together a 10-play, 53-yard drive, ending with Schmucker hitting Kyle Falk with a 10-yard TD pass with 1:10 left.
The Leopards went first in OT, but hurt themselves with a fumble on second down. South junior Lonnel Bush picked off a pass on fourth down to end the chance.
Three plays later, Evans was running into the end zone.
The Leopards outgained the Wildcats by more than 100 yards and had 21 first downs to South?s 10. South had six sacks, while Louisville had five. Devon Torrence left the field after spraining his ankle early in the fourth quarter.
?It feels good,? he said. ?I just rolled it.? Reach Repository sports writer Josh Weir at (330) 580-8426 or e-mail: [email protected]
