So i've been looking around at many different options to upgrade my car audio system with, and have been sifting through a lot of information so far. I've found a few Alpine head units that I really like, the CDA-105, the IDA-X305, and the CDA-9886, along with a Kenwood KDC-HD942U that all look pretty good.

Anybody have any suggestions or tips with what I should do? I drive a 2005 Honda Accord sedan, and want to start with a head unit before moving into new speakers/amp/sub. Altogether i'm not trying to spend more than $800-$1000, but i would be willing to spend a little bit more if it was really worth the extra money to get higher quality equipment.

I was also wondering if it would be better to go to Best Buy to get the stuff done, or a local specialist at Audio One. Best Buy is a little bit cheaper but I was also thinking that the specialty guys would be a better connection to have in case i need to keep coming back for advice.

For my money, JVC makes the best head units by far. Kenwood and Alpine are pretty damn good too.

I wouldn't take my car to Best Buy to get shit installed if they paid me. I can do it myself though. I'd take it to the local place if I were you.

The two best upgrades...and most important if you plan on getting subs...are tweeters and mids. I suggest getting some three way (high, mids, bass, all in one speaker) for your dash/door and rear deck/back doors. Tweeters can be installed pretty much anywhere. Soundstorm makes excellent mids and tweeters, as well as amps.

JVC head units are great, that's what I had put in and its was just over $130 and it performs very well.

Ok I have a question for those of you who could help me out.

If I get a head unit without a CD Player, and only the iPod adapter, can i still play CDs with an existing CD player in my car? For my Accord I bought the dash kit to install the head unit underneath the existing radio/ac controls, which already has a cd player, but with the installation of the head unit will that disconnect the old stuff? Will I not be able to play CDs on the original player if my new head unit does not have one?

If you install a new head unit, you usually have to unplug the old ones harness into the new one. So you most likely would not be able to play cds. I love my Alpine stuff(head unit, amp and sub) that I have in my car. I would have upgraded the mids/highs, but my VW has a stock bose system and it sounds good enough for me.

Have you ever looked at the website crutchfield.com? If you buy a head unit from them, they will send you detailed instructions on how to install the cd player. If you are having trouble, you can always call them up and they will have someone walk/talk you through the installation. If you don't want to mess with that go with your local car audio store instead of best buy.
