CB Ashton Youboty (CB Coach Purdue)

Answering the bell: The pressure was on cornerback Ashton Youboty to produce this camp, and he has had a better showing than the past two years. He did give up a long touchdown pass against Pittsburgh. But he?s willing to give up his body and be physical against the run. He has made some pickoffs in practice. And Bobby April likes his special teams play.

?I told Ashton in front of the defense that I have a lot of respect for him because he came out in this camp and he competed,? Fewell said. ?He knew he needed to step up and perform and in my opinion he did that. I really have just loved the way he?s competed in this camp.?

There?s a suspicion the Bills could be showcasing Youboty for a trade. He?s sixth on the cornerback depth chart. But the Bills could keep six corners.

Roster spot could be around the corner for Youboty
By Mark Gaughan NEWS SPORTS REPORTER
Updated: 08/26/08

Buffalo Bills cornerback Ashton Youboty made another play Sunday night to help his bid to stick on the team?s 53-man roster.

Youboty made a nice, leaping interception of a Quinn Gray pass in the end zone early in the third quarter.

The Colts faced a third-and-7 play from the Bills? 11. Youboty was lined up on the Colts? slot receiver but had zone coverage on the play. Youboty left the slot receiver to cover tight end Dallas Clark, who was running toward the corner of the end zone.

?I was inside in the nickel defense, and he [the slot receiver] ran a lower route to make me bite,? Youboty said. ?I read the eyes of the quarterback. . . . It was a concept we practiced all week. It was a common red-zone route.?

Youboty also had an interception against Washington and had a sack against Pittsburgh. He?s making a strong case for the Bills to keep six cornerbacks (one more than some teams carry) on the 53-man roster.

in final preseason game last night...

Cornerback Ashton Youboty, who has been battling to protect his roster spot since the Bills brought in veteran Will James and rookie draft picks Leodis McKelvin and Reggie Corner, had a sack, five tackles, two defended passes, and he forced a fumble, adding to the two interceptions he made in the first three games.

"Ashton has played pretty solidly throughout the preseason and tonight he made some plays," said Jauron.

Ashton Youboty had a strong preseason.

Ashton Youboty won?t be sitting nervously by his telephone this morning. Chances are he didn?t lose any sleep last night.

The young cornerback refuses to be consumed with thoughts of whether he will be a member of the Buffalo Bills for a third season. You see, he?s not one to worry about things he can?t control.

?The coaches will decide who makes this team and who doesn?t,? Youboty said after Thursday?s preseason finale against Detroit. ?I have no say in it, so all I can do is go out and let my performance speak for me.?

Youboty?s play spoke volumes this summer. He capped off a strong preseason against the Lions with several pass breakups and a sack. He finished with 28 tackles, two sacks and one interception.

Believed to be in danger going into training camp, Youboty may have cemented a spot on the Bills? 53-man roster, which will be released by 3 p. m. today.

What to do at cornerback is just one of many decisions the Bills face in determining who they will take into the regular season.

?I feel like I?ve worked hard and competed,? Youboty said. ?That?s all I can ask of myself. So we?ll have to see what happens.?

Cornerback (6): Terrence McGee, Jabari Greer, Will James, Leodis McKelvin, Reggie Corner and Ashton Youboty. Another tough one to call. Starters McGee and Greer, and McKelvin, the Bills? top draft pick, are sure things. Corner, a fourth-round pick, has looked better than McKelvin at times and will stick as well. If there?s an odd man out it?s either James or Youboty. But James is too valuable as a nickel back and you know what Youboty has done. If Youboty is let go there won?t be a shortage of teams interested in his services.

Youboty gives coaches something to think about

Orchard Park. N.Y. -
The odds were stacked against Ashton Youboty when he entered training camp in July for the Buffalo Bills.

Youboty watched as the Bills selected three cornerbacks in April?s NFL Draft, including Leodis McKelvin with the No. 11 overall pick. It looked like it would take a head-turning training camp and preseason to keep the Ohio State standout in western New York.

Youboty has made sure the coaching staff would have to think long and hard about giving up on him, since he recorded 28 tackles, an interception and two sacks in four games this preseason.

?It?s not really about confidence, it?s just about going out and doing what we do in practice, playing what defense is called and going from there,? Youboty said after Thursday?s final preseason game against Detroit.

Youboty?s career got off to a rocky start after he was selected by the Bills with the sixth pick of the third round in the 2006 draft. First his mom, Jeannet, died, causing him to miss three weeks of training camp, and then he went on the inactive list for the first nine games of the season.

Last season, however, the 5-foot-11, 189-pounder enjoyed some success, making 21 tackles and one interception in 11 games.

?He has played pretty solidly throughout the preseason,? said Bills coach Dick Jauron Thursday night. ?(Against Detroit), he got his hands on the ball and made some big plays.?

He didn't say anything that was untrue. He said "as of that point" and he was right, at that point I don't think Ashton had done enough to make the team. Obviously he did a lot in the preseason that allowed him to make the roster.

My point is the people who hated on Ashton never gave him a fair chance. He lost his mom at a young age and had to go through a high ankle sprain at the same time. I knew he had it in him and he proved me right!!!

Youboty named nickel corner
by Chris Brown, Lead Journalist
Last Updated: 9/1/2008

It?s official. Ashton Youboty?s status as a valuable cornerback has been reclaimed. After two trying years with injury and family tragedy, he has put it all together heading into year three. Named the team?s nickel cornerback coming out of the preseason Youboty is happy, but far from satisfied.

?I?m definitely happy with the outcome and just looking forward to the Seahawks and keep the production going and help this team win,? said Youboty.

Youboty was very productive during the preseason at a time where he had to be as the coaching staff added three rookies and a veteran at the position. He finished with 18 tackles, two interceptions, two sacks, one forced fumble and four pass defenses.

?He made tremendous plays in camp and in the preseason games,? said Donte Whitner. ?Those are great stats for four preseason games. He?s really stepped up and he?s our nickel back now. He?s going to make some plays. He?s really honed in on his skills and his responsibilities there.?

Having been his teammate in college at Ohio State, Whitner always knew what Youboty was capable of. However, the first two years of Youboty?s professional career made transitioning to the NFL difficult.

?With Ashton the number one thing with him was he lost his mom early and hurt his hamstring so his rookie season was pretty much wiped out,? said Whitner. ?So that year he pretty much spent the majority of his time on special teams and on scout team. He didn?t have the opportunity to learn the defenses that we were putting in each week.

?The second year he had an ankle injury that kept him out for a number of weeks. Jabari (Greer) goes in and Jabari plays well so Ashton?s kind of on the back burner.?

Year three for Youboty was going to be important whether there was a new crop of talent brought in at the cornerback position or not. But the added competition only seemed to fuel Youboty more.

?I just have a competitive nature,? said Youboty. ?Drafting three cornerbacks is a big move by a team so they wanted a shutdown at the corner position and I think it did (help me).?

?This year he had to make the team,? said Whitner. ?They put him in the fire and he came out and proved to everybody that he?s a good football player, and that he?s worthy of being on this football team.?

Exactly...I was simply stating that at the time he had done nothing to prove his value to the bills...clearly after this preseason he started living up to his potential...good for him

FOOTBALL: NFL: BILLS
Youboty finally finding his feet in Buffalo

JOHN WAWROW
The Associated Press
September 2, 2008

ORCHARD PARK -- Ashton Youboty is keenly aware he passed the first big test of his young career by winning the Buffalo Bills' third cornerback spot out of training camp. Just don't tell Youboty that he did it by playing with more confidence. Youboty considers that a backhanded compliment that makes it sound as if he lacked confidence in his previous two NFL seasons.
"It's funny, everybody keeps talking about confidence, confidence. I don't think it's about confidence," the 24-year-old said yesterday, as the Bills prepare to open the regular season at home against the Seattle Seahawks this weekend. "It confuses me. My confidence isn't moving."
Newfound confidence or not, Youboty finally began showing signs of the promise the Bills saw when they selected him in the third round of the 2006 draft out of Ohio State.
Youboty is coming off a breakout performance this summer in which he led the Bills with two interceptions, 19 tackles and a sack in four preseason games.
