CB Gareon Conley (D.C. Defenders)

GAREON CONLEY NOT FEELING LIKE 'THE NEW GUY' IN OHIO STATE'S SECONDARY

When Kerry Coombs was asked prior to Ohio State's season-opener against Virginia Tech if he had any worries about Gareon Conley stepping in as a starter for the 2015 season, the Buckeyes' cornerbacks coach couldn’t have been more blunt in his response.

“None,” Coombs said, quite emphatically. “Zero. You want me to say it again?”

Coombs didn’t need to repeat himself. His message was pretty loud and clear: He felt Conley was ready to be a starter for the Buckeyes.

It turns out Coombs’ confidence was justified, too, because in Ohio State’s 42-24 win against the Hokies, Conley was one of the team’s standout players on defense.

“Gareon Conley, first start was a champion,” head coach Urban Meyer said Wednesday, referring to how Conley graded out against Virginia Tech.

Gareon Conley Proving Coaches and Teammates 100% Correct

One of the big questions about the Ohio State defense for the 2015 season was how well the Buckeyes would be able to replace departed starter Doran Grant at cornerback.

With Eli Apple already established as a starter, it was going to be up to redshirt sophomore Gareon Conley and true sophomore Damon Webb to battle for the open job, and then the winner of that battle would need to make sure that there was no drop off from the play of the starters last season.

Conley began the spring with the ones and he never lost his spot as a starter. Through spring and fall camp, coaches and teammates sang Conley's praises. The memory that most outside of the program had of Conley coincided with his rough performance at Michigan State last season. The information that those close to Conley had, however, was much more up to date and accurate.

Conley had a fantastic game to open the season against Virginia Tech, and he continued his stellar play against Hawaii, notching a one-handed interception against Rainbow Warriors quarterback Max Wittek.

The people outside the program might be surprised by Conley's performance so far this season, but this is exactly what those inside the program expected.

"I think Gareon’s done an outstanding job in two games," said co-defensive coordinator Chris Ash. "He’s probably from last year to right now the most improved player on this defense. We knew he had a chance to be really good, but the first two games he’s proved that he’s going to have a chance to be a star here.

"I’m really excited about what he’s done. That interception was a great play. Third down, third and short. He was in great position. He turned his eyes back and the ball was there. I think he made a one-handed catch. It was a bang bang. It was a great catch. It was good position, he turns his head back inside and the ball’s right there. Usually guys knock that down or it hits them and they can’t make the catch, but he made the catch and completed the play and it was a good play."

rewatching the game now with Hawaii and damn did he play well. Whats scary is I've heard nothing from Eli Apple and honestly its because people don't even throw it his way and figure they'll take their odds with Gareon (which he's rised to the occasion).
