Ohio State football transfer Lejond Cavasos visiting Colorado, North Carolina
Ohio State football transfer Lejond Cavasos is making the rounds as he looks at his options in the NCAA transfer portal. Cavasos has taken his official visit to Colorado, and he is also slated to visit North Carolina, per Chris Hummer of 247Sports.

Cavazos, who was a backup cornerback for his two seasons at Ohio State and was slated to remain a backup this season if he stayed with the Buckeyes, will look to earn a bigger role in the Tar Heels’ secondary, though they return a pair of starting cornerbacks in Tony Grimes and Storm Duck.

I hadn't even realized he was in the portal. I get that the portal is great for the athlete, but as a fan, it sucks. Kids aren't gonna wait their turn anymore and it's just ruining the game for me. I know I don't amount to a hill of beans, but my enthusiasm for the sport is waning.

It’s all part of the game now….I think this is mutual in a way bc if they wanted to keep him bad enough, you use the NIL to keep him happy (like UGA is doing with young players on depth chart testing portal).
Ultimately, it could be as much as a new scheme, DC, philosophy, loss of Coombs, etc., as it is about the portal.
I still believe college football is the best sport on earth, and it’ll take a lot to pull me off that. But I can see how college athletics is losing the appeal to many (like when you see a fringe NBA draft pick get a 2 year $800k deal and a car to go to University of Miami…lolz).

How is this any different than coaches? Coaches leave all the time, case in point this off season. Fans are harder on players than they are the grown ups calling plays. Kids should have every right to leave if they don’t feel like they’re going to get PT at their current school. Some kids will stay, but many want to play. I honestly don’t think that any player that OSU lost to the portal was going to make much difference anyway, and them leaving speaks more to the talent that is staying. Cavazos leaving makes me more excited about guys like Hancock, Johnson, Jyaire Brown and Ryan Turner.
Just like coaches are welcome to leave for bigger salaries, returning to their alma mater, etc. I’m sure us OSU fans would be excited if Fickell were to become our next HC if Day were to leave. But how many OSU fans would shed a tear over UC losing their most successful HC in program history?

Iguess I’ll never understand people rooting for young adults to risk their lives, for essentially free. Miss me with the tuition talk, because the best kids who attend the schools that are really sports factories are looking to be professionals. And it makes no sense to be fine with them not earning an income, but a kid playing eSports can earn upwards of 6 figures, or a dance major can teach classes and earn an income, etc. I love CFB, but this boys always deserved to earn something for risking it all for our enjoyment. Especially when we’re sitting in the stands wearing their jerseys, talking about them on message boards and following their every move on social media.

Yeppers, that's the reality of it and free agency has come to college sports now. The genie is out of the bottle and it's not going to be put back in any time soon, probably never. The top tier programs with the NIL money aren't recruiting student-athletes anymore; they are basically renting mercenary athletes. A very small percentage of these college football players will have any meaningful professional career and if they do it is only for a few years (NFL average is 3 years). Also an even smaller percentage get the big bucks (set for life) contracts. Yeah, I know the NFL minimum wage is in the high 6 figures: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cba/minimum/ but I'll say most of the "3 year wonders" that get the minimum wage still won't have very much left after they leave football. IMHO, the travesty is that most of these players (especially the ones that transfer) are probably reducing their chances of graduating (with a meaningful degree as opposed to something like "General Studies") and not being able to realize/achieve their full financial potential in a career after football, etc.

Just to be clear tho….NFL agents are anonymously telling football reporters that the NIL is amazing bc it’s saving them millions of dollars before the kids turn pro.
Again, this was always happening, just not in the public sphere.
It’s why a guy like Dabo is constantly crying about NIL…..it’s tough when he doesn’t have a leg up using a local church in Clemson to funnel money to his players.
