Five sleepers to keep an eye on:

Ifeadi Odenigbo 6-4 210 DE Centerville
Odenigbo is even a sleeper on his own team. Michael Bennett gets most of the well deserved hype on Centerville's D-line, and Kyle Rose (WVU verbal) and Benny McMullen (2012 DT/OG prospect) also have garnered their fair share of attention. The guy that is overlooked, though, is Odenigbo, who combines decent size and great athleticism (he's a standout sprinter on Centerville's track team). Raw, to be sure, but a very high ceiling.

LaKeith Walls 6-4 195 LB Cleveland Rhodes
Walls is a similar athlete to Odenigbo in that he has a good frame and is a standout sprinter. Unlike, Odenigbo, though, he is under the radar because he plays at Rhodes and isn't surrounded by anywhere near the supporting cast. Assuming his grades are in order, expect his name to start popping up in recruiting articles sooner rather than later.

Jeremy Campbell 5-11 240 FB Clayton Northmont

This kid is a prototype fullback. He is well regarded as a defensive tackle, but obviously his size precludes that at the major college level. He's arguably the strongest kid in Ohio as well, sporting a deadlift of over 500 lb. and a squat over 800. A pile mover? Yup.

Myles Hilliard 6-5 245 OT Bedford
For whatever reason, Bedford has a lot of kids slip under the radar. Lee Evans didn't get OSU's attention until late and slipped away to Wisconsin and later, the NFL. Rodger Saffold was spied by Terry Hoeppner and became a stud tackle at Indiana and is now in the NFL. There have been plenty of others as well who have done well in the MAC. Hilliard may be the next one to slip under the radar. He has good feet, the frame, to bulk up to 300 lb. and the athleticism to be a left tackle. Isaiah Matthews is another 2012 Bedford player who is also not garnering the attention he deserves.

Timonte Anderson 5-10 175 CB/WR Akron Firestone

Garfield and Buchtel get most of the attention in the Akron City League, but Firestone has a nice collection of athletes as well. Tommy Brown is an OSU commit and Cody Grice is a TB/LB that should end up at an FBS school next February. Anderson should be the next in line. He's a great athlete with the requisite speed and quickness to play on either side of the ball in college.

There was a lot of talk of our staff going after WRs in 2012 in the Corey Smith thread and I didn't want to bog it down further. But with our WR corps losing 2-3 players that get PT, we probably don't need to land but 1-2 commits at that position. Besides the stud from MO, who else are some of the big names on our coaches list. And I know it's still quite early

'Denard Robinson Effect' will help Michigan in recruiting battles | detnews.com

Sam Webb: Allen, let’s fast forward to next year’s recruiting class in the state of Michigan. There are a number of prospects already receiving Division I attention. Without putting them in any particular order, can you list the youngsters that stick out to you as the best prospects in the state at this early stage of evaluation?

Allen Trieu: “James Ross, the linebacker from Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, is certainly one of the top guys. He already has offers from Michigan and Michigan State. He plans to be at the game (Saturday). Cass Tech has a bunch of juniors. Terry Richardson is a standout corner and Royce Jenkins Stone is an athletic linebacker. Both guys should pick up multiple high-level Division I offers. Their teammate, Laron Taylor, also deserves mention. It’ll be interesting to see who offers him because he is a little bit undersized to play linebacker, but he is one of the top performers I’ve seen. I also think what the speedy running back, Drake Johnson, has been doing over at (Ann Arbor) Pioneer has him up there. The big defensive tackle, Dan O’Brien from Flint Powers, already has two big-time offers from Michigan and Tennessee. He is definitely going to be a high-end guy. There are a number of others that are worthy of mentioning like Kelby Latta from Battle Creek Harper Creek, Dakota Perry from Capac, Detrick Goff from Grand Blanc, Chase Deback over at Charlotte. Those are a few of guys that have intriguing physical ability, but that we need to see more of. Those guys are all looking like Division I prospects and there are a number of others that I didn’t even mention. I think the state is going to be really, really strong next year.”

Sam Webb: You said the state of Michigan is going to be loaded next year relative to its normal level of talent. Word out of Ohio is they’re expecting a bumper crop in 2012 as well. That state already has a reputation for one of the most fertile talent grounds in the country. Does that 2012 mean it will be a gigantic recruiting year in the Buckeye State.

Allen Trieu: “Yes! There are too many elite prospects in that state next year to list in this interview. The defensive end position alone is going to produce a ton of Division I prospects. It is just so deep. At first glance a handful of defensive ends all merit four-star or higher consideration. There’s Se’Von Pittman from Canton McKinney, Adolphus Washington from Cincinnati Taft, LaTroy Lewis from Akron Archbishop Hoban, Greg McMullen from Akron Archbishop Hoban, Tom Strobel from Mentor and Chris Wormley from Toledo Whitmer. Those are a few of the top-level defensive ends that we’ve noticed so far. There definitely will be more that emerge in the coming months. Then we haven’t even begun to talk about the big-time talent at the other positions like running back. That state is absolutely loaded.”

Class of 2012 - Quarterbacks

Written by Duane Long
Thursday, 21 October 2010 14:07

With the current depth at Ohio State I don't know if the Buckeyes are going to be in the market for a quarterback in the class of 2012. If they are I think we might be seeing a better crop that we thought would be out there when we first started looking at the class of 2012. I don't think the names you first heard are going to be the ones at the top of the list though.

The first name that broke out in this class was Marty Mauk. He had a head start as his older brother was the most prolific passer in state history and the offense run at Kenton is one that draws alot of interest. I don't know if the glare of the spotlight has done him alot of good. I think he is a better prospect than Ben. He is bigger and has a little better arm but that does not mean his is big or has a great arm. Notice that the schools he has ties natural ties to, Cincinnati and Notre Dame, are the only ones showing interest so far. He is a better athlete than Ben. The one thing they have in common is grit. Both are competitors of the higest order. Good quarterback. Definitely a D-1 kid who will be recruited harder than his brother but not the best in the state.

FYI, #2 on his list (who is hearing from OSU and FSU) had a season-ending knee injury last Friday...

Orchard Lake St. Mary?s linebacker James Ross (JOSH HELMHOLDT/Special to DFP)

The NCAA has changed their rules and eliminated written offers to football prospects in the junior class in an effort to slow down the recruiting process, but predictably the experiment has produced little headway on the topic. Member institutions are simply telling recruits that they have offers and, so far, those recruits are treating verbal offers the same as they did written offers.

Many schools, including Michigan, begin verbally offering recruits towards the end of their sophomore year in high school. The new NCAA rules, which went into effect for the 2012 class, dictate that written offers cannot be extended until Aug. 1, before a recruit?s senior year.

Orchard Lake St. Mary?s class of 2012 linebacker James Ross received verbal offers from U-M, Michigan State and Cincinnati in the spring. Many of top prospects for the 2012 class, like Ross, have also received verbal offers from colleges, just as they would have were written offers still allowed.

The second 2012 in-state prospect with an offer from U-M was Flint Powers defensive tackle Danny O?Brien. The 6-foot-3, 275-pound O?Brien picked up an offer from Tennessee after participating in the Volunteers? camp this summer. U-M notified O?Brien of his offer after he attended the Wolverines? game against Bowling Green.

"It definitely means a lot, especially growing up in Michigan," O'Brien said after receiving the offer. "My dad and my brother were real big Michigan fans and they were definitely excited for me. It was a great feeling and is a lot of stress relieved."

U-M also recently notified Toledo (Ohio) Whitmer defensive end Christiopher Wormley that he had an offer from the Wolverines. Like O?Brien, Wormley got the news of his offer after attending a U-M game earlier this month. The 6-4, 255-pound Wormley had previously received scholarship offers from the likes of MSU, Ohio State and Illinois.
