Defense shuffles Bears into Super Bowl

By BARRY WILNER
AP Football Writer

CHICAGO (AP) -- The Chicago Bears know how to make a Super Bowl memorable. They're making this one historic long before it's played. Dissed all season long, Rex Grossman and Co. are heading to the big game for the first time since 1985 after rolling over the New Orleans Saints 39-14 Sunday, and Da Coach leading them there makes it all the more special.

Bears Sign Lovie Smith to Extension

By The Associated Press
The Chicago Bears decided Lovie Smith was the right coach to lead the team into the next decade ? with hopefully a few more Super Bowl appearances.
A week after Smith's agent said negotiations were so stalled the coach would probably leave after the 2007 season, the Bears signed Smith to a four-year contract extension through 2011 on Wednesday.

Bears Pro Bowler Lance Briggs ready to sit out season

I am now prepared to sit out the year if the Bears don't trade me or release me," Briggs told FOXSports.com via cell phone Monday. "I've played my last snap for them. I'll never play another down for Chicago again."

Briggs was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent earlier this month but the Bears slapped him with the Franchise tag, which pretty much keeps him as their property for next season at a one-year salary of $7.2 million.

Sure was nice of them to let him leave the state and play in a superbowl before going to jail

ESPN
SKOKIE, Ill. -- Chicago Bears defensive lineman Tank Johnson was sentenced Thursday to four months in jail for violating probation in a 2005 gun case.

Johnson immediately was taken into custody. He could have been sentenced to up to a year behind bars.

Johnson, who pleaded guilty to violating his probation, also must pay a $2,500 fine.

if that were a normal citizen who had a sister's wedding or something down in Miami there's no way the court would have let him/her go.

Hey c'mon - Johnny Sacks got out for his daughter's wedding. :wink2:

Lance Briggs signed a 1 year deal so he will not be holding out. Vasher and Tillman both signed long-term deals. As long as Tommie Harris is healthy I think the Bears will make another run to the SuperBowl based on their defense.

Benson has to stay healthy this year though, for the entire year. He has yet to prove he can do that. I am a big Adrian Peterson fan though, his league minimum contract is about the best deal in the league.

The Bears opened their preseason in Houston tonight. A rather dull game, but Ditka's commentary in the 4th quarter livened it up somewhat.

Talking about the attendance in Reliant Stadium, (around 70,000 announced), he had earlier stated that the stadium was less than half full by halftime.

When the play-by-play guy said 70,000, Ditka laughed and said "70,000 - you're shittin' me - they don't have that many toes in here". The local NBC affiliate will get a few phone calls. :tongue2:
