Cincinnati Bengals 2014 Thread of Frustration

Bengals signed former Texans strong safety Danieal Manning to a 1 year contract today. Good pickup at a position of need and he could potentially get the start over Iloka. At the very least, he gives us good depth there and potentially changes my mind about taking a safety with the first pick. He had injury issues in Houston but hopefully he can stay healthy here.

The more I think about it, I would love to see us take Shazier if he is available. Shazier at WILL, Burfict at SAM, and Mauluga at MIKE would make a great LB corp behind a great DL. I also would not mind see us taking a corner with the first pick considering all the question marks I mentioned above. Shazier is still my first choice though.
As soon as I saw he was released, I was intrigued

Roby yes, Shazier no..

I'd take Shazier if he were still around for the Bengals second pick.

I'd almost be surprised if Shazier was available at #24 honestly...NFL teams put so much stock into combine/pro days and Shazier lit up both. Plus he has the highlight film and production to back it up. I really think he could thrive in our defense but I would like either of Shazier or Roby at 24.

Another thought, any chance we go offense with the first pick? The club has already said we are not going QB or WR with the first pick...I'm not completely sure why we are so satisfied with the WR corp. Jones and Sanu are solid players, but I think we could get a prolific #2 with the first pick...but it isn't happening apparently. And of course we aren't going RB with the first pick, nor TE with Eifert/Gresham. So the only other option would be OL and picking up Newhouse gives us depth at tackle and guard in place of Collins, plus Tanner Hawkinson looks like he has an NFL career ahead of him. Boling and Zeitler did a really solid job last year at guard, and Whitworth/Smith are a solid tackle duo. We have no firm center yet, but there are no centers even close to a first round grade and we could get good value for one in the 2nd or 3rd round. To me it seems we are almost assuredly going defense with our first pick.

secondary is the biggest weakness of the team IMO....our corners are just not good (and now old)

Also with the WR couple of people on NFL Live did have Green/Jones in the top 5 of best 1/2 combo's

Agreed on the secondary, a corner or safety would be a great start. Green is fantastic of course but Jones needs to be more consistent.

Definitely wouldn't kind Shazier....but as said he is probably gone before 24 due to the over stock on combines/workouts which he destroyed.

I think CB is the biggest need and should be addressed round 1

Would not be shocked of they go DE though if the right player is there.

I only highlighted what you said because I would be incredibly angry if that happens. Dunlap, Geathers, Gilberry, and Hunt are a great rotation and we drafted Hunt early last year to already address that area. Plus we just signed Moch and Montgomery. If we don't go CB or OLB, it is a bust imo...no other position of need other than maybe interior OL. I know I have scarlet and gray colored glasses on, but it just so happens that one of Roby or Shazier will be there then...so that is my choice. And Shazier might go before 24 but I kind of doubt it...a lot of mocks don't even have him in the first 26 picks.

I REALLY think the Bengals need to go CB with the first round pick. I didn't mean taking Shazier in the second as a knock on Shazier. I just think secondary is the biggest need with the most value in this year's draft.

Agreed completely. Any of Gilbert, Verrett, Roby, Fuller, or Dennard would be great at #24. I almost prefer Fuller because I think he is close to a Hall clone and we are basically drafting opposite of Kirkpatrick for the boundary corner and he fits the bill. But again, I would like any of those guys but Shazier adds an excitement dimension that the others do not imo.

I'd be happy with best CB available or Shazier

Think it'll depend on what/how many CB's are taken before Bengals

Agreed completely. I was thinking ideally we get Shazier in the first and Lamarcus Joyner slips to us late 2nd...love his versatility as either a corner or safety, plus he would be a great Nickel.

However, you are absolutely right on your second note...if somehow Gilbert or Dennard slip to 24, no way you pass. I also think Roby or Verrett would not be a bad pick at 24, but if Shazier is there I would prefer him...he adds the type of explosiveness and pass rush we do not currently have in our LB corps. Usually our front four gets a pretty good rush but having the threat of Shazier coming off the edge could cause nightmares, plus he is great in pass coverage. I think he is WAY underrated due to size but here is why I am not worried...with his speed and aggressiveness, he makes up quite a bit. Plus he will certainly grow to 240-245 by year two or three...in our system, we can afford to use him situationally and develop him into an every-down LB by year two or three (if needed). Below is my ideal mock draft:

Round 1: LB Ryan Shazier
Round 2: DB Lamarcus Joyner
Round 3: OL Jack Mewhort (I know, another Buckeye...but we need to solidify our OL depth and Jack plays every spot on the line)
Round 4: WR Jarred Abrederis (adds a legit weapon in the slot if he falls this far)
Round 5: DE Aaron Lynch (has the long build we like at DE and gives us a little more depth here)
Round 6: C Corey Linsely (ANOTHER Buckeye but we really need a center and we get good value here with Linsley
Round 7: Why even guess

- Also note that I would definitely not object to taking McCarron if he falls to us in the 3rd round...someone needs to turn up the heat on Dalton's ass.

I am curious to see what position teams take a run on...last year teams went OL crazy and that is how Eifert fell to us (remains to be seen if that was a blessing or curse). If teams take a run on DBs and not LBs, I would love to see us go Shazier. If they go LB crazy, we could have some really nice options at CB. I think CB is the greatest position of need but I would take Shazier over Verrett and Roby if those are the only CBs left with a 1st round grade. If Shazier is gone, hopefully one of Gilbert, Dennard, or Fuller is there (don't have my hopes up on the first two).

If we didn't have to give up a whole lot, I wouldn't mind moving up to get Gilbert or Dennard...we don't need a ton of players this year (not many weak spots), just the right guys for the position...depending on how teams are drafting, I wouldn't mind moving up to "get the best player available" at a position of need, rather than taking the best player available at a position we do not need (such as DL, OL, or WR). This team needs to get over the hump THIS year and adding depth at positions is not what I want to see with the early picks.
