Cincinnati Bengals 2014 Thread of Frustration

Hell, I'd take Hawkins for Gresham straight up. I don't think Cleveland would let that fly. But they've made much MUCH more questionable calls than that, so anything is possible, I suppose.

I would too because Gresham cannot conceive how to carry a ball not like a loaf of bread. However, he has turned into a pretty good blocker and gives us value there...but even still, not enough value to renew his current contract numbers.

After the game last week I wrote a real long post about next season (cause I was ready to give up on this one) and then deleted it, so you're all welcome for the win.

I'll summarize more quickly [turns out wasn't that quickly] - I think DL absolutely has to be our #1 draft priority. We've been by FAR the worst team rushing the passer per PFF, and it's not even close. Additionally, we've graded terribly against the run. I know Geno's health and Brandon Thompson being hurt play a part there but even so. Peko and Geathers both come off the books next offseason and I really hope we let both walk or re-sign them to vet minimum deals as deep backups at best. At this point Margus Hunt still isn't showing anything and Will Clarke can't get on the field despite how bad our pass rush has been so that doesn't inspire much confidence.

Ideally, I'd like to see our draft look something like this:

1st - DE: Specifically someone who was a 4-3 DE in college and has a real high floor. Price will likely be too steep but trading up for Gregory/Williams would be fine by me. Not worried about too many DEs cause we can always slide Dunlap/Gilberry down to DT on obvious pass rush downs
2nd - LB: Turns out Rey Maualuaga is still bad and isn't getting any better
3rd - DT: Think we really need more talent on the DL. Maybe a DE/DT hybrid here but ultimately someone who can generate pressure. Bennet is the mold I'm thinking of but he likely won't be available here.
4th - OT: Project LT to groom behind Whit
5th - WR: Brandon Tate is a FA and PLEASE DEAR GOD DON'T RE-SIGN HIM HE IS AWFUL. Get a 4th WR who doubles as our primary KR/PR.
6th - TE: Blocking TE with good hands even if limited athleticism for Gresham's in-line role
7th - C: Someone to push Bodine to improve from his mediocre rookie year.

IMO, Safety isn't a huge need. Iloka is playing well, Nelson is only 31, and we just took Shawn Williams in the 3rd two years ago. Also, moving Newman to safety seems like a possibility soon.

The DL is certainly worth tracking closely as the season moves along...the DL was dominant last year and they have been a far cry from that this year. It seems Atkins is getting better every week, so hopefully he is back to being an elite DT soon. And both of Dunlap and Gilberry have looked very good. Peko has definitely regressed (likely age?) but is still serviceable against the run, although we need Thompson back asap. The biggest disappointment to me has been Hunt...looked like he was getting it in preseason but looks completely lost out there on Sundays. As for Clarke, I never understood that pick and I personally don't expect anything from him but he is just a rookie.

To me, I would prefer a DT if we are going DL with the first pick (although LB would be great too, depends on who is there). Even if Atkins gets back to his old self, Peko is way past his prime and Thompson cannot stay healthy...Still has played fairly well but I think he is more of a depth guy. Don't get me wrong, we could use a DE as well if someone slips to us but I just see a more pressing need in the middle, whether it be DT or MLB.

Burfict out for at least two weeks with a knee injury...at least we have the Jags next and while the Browns are no pushover this season, we could get by without him at home. But still, it just keeps coming and now we are starting two undrafted LBs and a rookie 6th round LB...hopefully he gets everything in tact over the next couple weeks and is 100% by the time we go to New Orleans...no way we get by them on the road without Burfict.

Green still day to day but it sounds like he had a very good day in practice and should play Sunday. While I want him back, it is also Jacksonville and I don't want to risk it.

Flashback

From 1984 to 1991, the Cincinnati Bengals were coached by Sam Wyche and Wyche basically hated two things: Houston Oilers coach Jerry Glanville and the city of Cleveland.

During the 1989 season Wyche gave everyone a good example of both hatreds.

In Week 15, Wyche called a timeout with under a minute left against the Oilers so that the Bengals could kick a field goal -- to win the game 61-7.

Then there's the video below, which also happened in 1989.

During a Week 14 game against the Seahawks, Bengals fans started throwing beer bottles and trash on the field after a controversial call by officials. The Seahawks refused to continue the game until the Bengals could get things under control, so Wyche grabbed the stadium microphone and did what any good Cincinnatian would do: He made fun of Cleveland.

"You don't live in Cleveland, you live in Cincinnati."

Wyche is clearly saying that Cleveland is a lawless land where throwing stuff on the field is tolerated and Cincinnati is not. Wyche summed up the Bengals-Browns rivalry with those nine words.

Those words are worth mentioning this week because the rivalry is back. The Browns and Bengals both have a winning record going into Thursday night's game, the first time that's happened his late in the season since Week 15 in 1986.
