Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Charlie Frye won the first round of the Browns' quarterback competition Saturday night against the Chiefs, but his legs may have hurt his chances to officially regain the leg up.
In fact, the derby is still so unsettled that rookie Brady Quinn is expected to move up the depth chart this week and get some significant playing time against the Detroit Lions this Saturday.

I was at the game and was amazed how the fans were chanting for Quinn. That will last until he throws his first int Saturday. Unfortunately Frye showed that he isn't smart enough to throw the ball away rather than run at the end of the half. I guarantee that any coach would be pissed at him for that even if he had scored. The only way I wouldn't be pissed is if he scored untouched without anyone within a few yards of him when he crosses the goal line. He would be halfway decent if he wasn't so stupid.

You hear the fans on TV chanting "Brady, Brady,..." before the 4th quarter even began. I don't know if they will boo him on Saturday when he throws a int. If they realize what they have on the bench.

Totally agree with you regarding Charlie. I think even a high school quarterback would have enough brains to throw the ball away in that situation. It just seemed like he reverted back to last year and is that what have been a regular-season game I don't know what Romeo would have done.

While I don't agree with everything that Tony Grossi, PD Browns beat writer, has to say I listened to his potcast today and I thought he made an excellent point when he said that Romeo showed a tremendous lack of leadership as a head football coach by flipping a coin:) to see who would be the starting QB in a exhibition football game. Romeo's lack of leadership permeates down through the entire team.

I would say that Romeo will be gone by mid-season...which means that this team will have to learn yet another system next year. Continuity might help...

While that is entirely possible, I can't put all the blame on Romeo. Savage's drafting skills must have been left in Baltimore and injuries certainly have played a role but if the Browns get blown out in some games someone will have to take the fall and it will be RC. Hopefully, Cowher will want to coach next year:)

maybe....

I wouldn't be surprised if Romeo is around next year simply so that the new coach doesn't get stuck without a 1st rounder his first year....

maybe....

I'm not quite sure where you get the statement about Savage's drafting skills.

the 2005 draft wasn't sensational:
Edwards is in his 3rd year, and has dealt with a tore ACL.
Brodney Pool is starting at safety.
Charlie Frye is a nothing but a backup qb in the NFL. What do you really expect for a 3rd round pick in his 3rd year?
Antonio Perkins was a whiff
David McMillan is a decent backup
Nick Speegle didn't cut it, but he was a 6th rounder
Andrew Hoffman is a backup at RG.

the 2006 draft was pretty good:
Kam Wimbley - potential star
D'Qwell Jackson - starting ILB
Travis Wilson - 4th wr
Leon Williams - potential future replacement for Andra Davis in 2 seasons
Isaac Sowells - jury is still out. currently 2nd string RG
Demario Minter - never been healthy yet
Jerome Harrison - 3rd down back
Lawrence Vickers - starting FB
Babtunde Oshinowo - 2nd string DE now

the 2007 draft class looks to be potentiall very good:
joe thomas is already starting at LT
eric wright is starting at cb
quinn will be starting by midseason
the day 2 guys will all make the final roster

I don't feel like going through every player and making a comment. All I will say is that he has two drafts and except maybe for Winslow not one of them is what I would call a high caliber NFL player.

this is an even dumber comment. first, winslow wasn't a savage pick. secondly, how many players are "high caliber NFL players" after only two years in the league? you'll need more evidence than what you call a high caliber player. it's not surprising that you don't want to go through all the players I listed, as it would really refute your statement.
