Cleveland Browns (2011 season)

with either the 4th or 5th pick the browns are in a interesting spot...if Blackmon is there you can take him and not worry about reaching for him there...i know i dont share the opinion of everyone else but i think if RG3 is there we take him...problem is we wont be the only team going after RG3...i can see the rams trading out of the #2 spot to a team that wants to trade up for Griffin...i think 4 or 5 is way to high to take richardson...if we trade down and then get him i will be happy with that...first 2 picks have to be either QB, WR, or RB...then in the rounds after that we get a RT, CB, WR, DE

IMO if the team that played today is the team that shows up for 16 games next season, with a new OC, Richardson, hopefully Floyd, 3-4 draft picks on D, and a couple new OL they will win at least 6 games. They need play makers, but they should be able to get at least two in the draft with 4 other draft picks that you would expect to be starters. OG and DE should be easy positions to fill with FA's.
Maybe I'm looking on the bright side too much, but I don't think they are that far away with the right moves. If I'm wrong and they are as bad next year as they were this year they can pick a QB with their first pick and at least he'll have better weapons to succeed. I'd still sign Hillis if he will sign for the right price with no more than 2 years. If not I'd look to franchise him and then work a trade. Another season of Hillis with Richardson wouldn't be a bad thing. If they do end up picking QB at 4/5 I'll switch over to glass half empty.

I agree. I don't think this team is THAT far away from being a decent competitor and it is pretty sad 6 wins is being used as the benchmark.

A good offseason and I think this team can sniff a .500 record. Hell look at the Bengals. Give Colt someone like AJ Green, build the line a little bit, and boom. They benefited from a pretty easy schedule (same one that we didn't...) and looked very respectable.

Sign a veteran WR, draft one with the first 3 picks you have in the top 40 of the draft, bring some stability to the RB (whether that means parting ways with Hillis and drafting someone, Richardson? Don't know), patch up the offensive line, especially the right side, and there you have a respectable NFL offense.

With this, McCoy would be the wild card. Putting a solid team around him would eliminate the excuses and if he doesn't live up to par or is just "average", then it is time to move. I'm not sold on RGIII and I think Matt Flynn will be too expensive and could very well be a system QB, Kevin Kolb anyone? Plus there is the opportunity cost of not using that pick to help shore up other spots.
So I don't really want to see them overhaul QB. Not yet at least.

I really like Trent Richardson, I think he may be the best back to come out within the past few years. But, taking a RB in the top 5 is pretty bad value wise and the Browns better be damn sure he is the next Adrian Peterson otherwise the pick could be much better off spent elsewhere.

If we can bring in one of the A-list WRs in free agency (a stretch, but not a huge long shot), a solid starting RT and a guard (or two if Steinbach isn't back), then I would be extremely happy offensively heading into the draft.

Oh and an offensive coordinator. Please. Just not Brian Daboll.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the offseason, especially the Browns really are players in free agency like they say they will be and having 3 picks in the top 40 is fun.

I'm usually pretty pessimistic (being a Browns fan it's pretty easy to be) but I'm cautiously optimistic about the future. This team is very, very young and will only get better. Remember we had brand new coaches that put in brand new schemes on both sides of the ball. Add on the all of that the lockout with no minicamps, OTAs and a brutally short overall offseason. Absolutely terrible year to be going through a transition. The Browns played hard this year, came close so many times, but they are an extremely young team and I tried to remind myself that.

I agree with a lot of this. I'm not sold on RGIII, but I can't deny that he is an electric player. I'm personally kind of hoping we can get WAS or MIA to overpay and trade up for him, especially if Blackmon is off the board at #4 (though I agree with you about Blackmon being a bit of a reach at 4). He is the best WR in the draft but he's not freakishly good like Green or C.Johnson.

We'll have to see.

All this sounds good...I have visions of Richardson, Blackmon, and even RGIII dancing in my head. Of course, what the Browns will actually do...is...

Trade down in the first round to get out of the 5th pick, down to where the Atlanta pick is somewhere, so let's say they get down to picks, I dunno, 18 and 20 and then have 3 second rounders.

Then they'll trade out f the first round with that pick entirely, "stockpiling picks" (I can see the t-shirts now) in the second and third rounds.

With the Atlanta pick late in the first they'll take a guard or a linebacker from a college no one has ever heard of.

With the "stockpiled" picks in round 2, they'll take a couple of underwhelming DL and an underachieving toad like Jeffrey at WR, claiming that pairing him with Little will give us "2 dynamic playmakers". The final 2nd round pick will be a tweener, like a WR/TE or a DL/LB, because we always have to take at least one guy per draft that has no real position.

In the third round they will take countless DBs who put up good combine numbers but have reams of film showing them getting burned by actual WRs on the actual field, along with perhaps a project OL who has great size but no chance to start within 4 years and maybe another project WR who was either suspended, injured, and/or academically ineligible at least twice.

In the later rounds, we'll get a "diamond in the rough" RB who had one good year at a school like Kentucky to compete with Hardesty and replace him when he blows out his next knee, as well as a couple of safeties who will never make a roster and likely a crappy kicking prosepct to replace Dawson.

And that is my optimistic appraisal of the situation.

Are there any QB's that would be worth picking up in FA instead of drafting one? I'd rather not take a QB in the draft in all honesty. It hasn't worked out for us since we came back as a team.

I'd rather pick up a veteran QB who has some good experience and pick up some studs at WR/RB, defense, OL that he can help develop

Matt Flynn's gonna be majorly in demand, but I doubt the clowns open their wallet to go after him.

ya Matt Flynn but especially after yesterdays performance, regardless if it is because of the packers offense and playmakers, he will be in high demand as NFBuck said...Flynn would be a better fit for Shumurs offense then RG3, but the thing is how long do we know Shumur will be here? The best fit for this offense is Luck but we know that the colts will be taking him unless they are offered the same deal the saints offered for Ricky Williams...so we do know this, Colts will be taking Luck, Rams will probably be trading down, Jaguars need a QB and could take one, the Bucs need a slew of thiings so hopefully we win the coin flip and get the #4 pick so the reality of getting Blackmon is there

The Curse of Kelly Holcomb - when will it end?

Since the Browns blew a 12 point lead in the 4th quarter in a playoff game at Pittsburgh the Steelers have won 17 of 18 versus Cleveland, and a couple of Super Bowls.

Cleveland hasn't had a winning season since then.
10-6 in 2007. However, all that season does is prove that even the worst of the worst can, occasionally, stumble into mediocrity every now and then.

If the Browns can't get Floyd with the Falcons pick I would love to see them draft Posey. I know all they need is another 2nd or 3rd round WR, but Posey has always impressed me. They still wouldn't have a true #1, but Posey and Little would make a pretty good pair of WR's especially if you put a Richardson in the backfield.

I like Posey but he drops way too many balls....I never saw the consistency during his career here.

They just drafted Gabbert last year in the Top-10. They aren't drafting another QB despite the fact that Gabbert looks like a girl.
