Cleveland Browns (2012 season)

I'm thinking Weeden has 4 weeks to turn it around before the Browns write him off. They only have 1 home game in that stretch and the ownership change will go through by then IIRC. If they are 0-5 when Cinci rolls into town on 10/4 look for changes to be made.

It's never as good or as bad as it looks in week 1 so we'll see how the Browns O looks in Cinci next week.

I don't think so. I think the owners will let this staff crash and burn with their own decisions, it will make it much easier to clean out the trash next season. I am not a fan of McCoy going back in despite what Weeden looked like...we know McCoy sucks, we need to have enough games to eliminate all possibility of Weeden not sucking so they can go the Barkley direction next year. Yippee.

BTW I am going to watch Browns Tonight in a few minutes...I better not hear Dickbag Shurmur say "We did some good things on offense in spots". No, assfuck, you didn't. You had a Benjamin reverse, Richardson ran over Coleman once, and you sucked Turkish bath poon for the other 59 minutes. Meanwhile, your defense played like the 85 Bears and you still couldn't manage to win will all that offensive knowledge you never miss a chance to tell people you think you have. You are a piece of crap. Just admit it.

Weeden's 3 pass plays next week:

-Slant
-Airmail
-Interception

Really I'd just love to see this team hang its hat on something.

All great teams have that dominant phase of their game. NYG - front 4 and pass rush. Pats? Passing game. San Fran - Defense.

The defense appears to be leaps and bounds better then the offense. Still wouldn't hurt to have another playmaker or two. Another top tier CB and perhaps a LB or DE would really make this squad shine.

The Oline - we need Pinkston and Lavoau gone. Shwartz has his bad moments (often) then has his solid downs as well. Rookie inconsistency.
Trent I'm not worried about. No preseason work. Shotty line play. Just
don't wear him into the ground before we fix the Oline. Especially if we're
sticking with Weeden until next year (doubtful) but I sure as shit don't want to see Barkley on this team. We have so many other weaknesses on offense. Oh, how awesome would it be to have Vickers back? You know - a FB that can actually block worth a shit.

Where was Jordan Cameron? Or was he not active today?

Agreed on Gordon. Another year and that kid will be legit. Fix the Oline, and that will be your biggest step towards fielding a remotely capable offense. Hell even a middle of the road NFL offense would have won by 10+ today.

For the first time since they came back the defense actually looked somewhat fast out there. The youth movement on that side of the ball will pay dividends down the road...really encouraging.

That being said, the NFL is still a Quarterbacks league and it looks like we may have drafted a 29 year old Nuke LaLoosh.

No matter how bad he looked - and it was bad - there is no way you give up on your first round draft pick QB after 4 games. I could give you a list of QBs who sucked their first year and went on to be good, and in some cases great, but I don't want the inevitable "you think he's the next (insert good QB here)" response I know I'll get from some people (not necessarily you). I don't think that at all. I agree with many here that the pick was a mistake.

The point is, once you make that leap you have to give him at least a year, hoping he surprises you. Besides, if Colt McCoy was all that I think he'd have shown enough by now that they wouldn't have drafted Weeden in the first place.

I agree, but I can only imagine what the fan reaction will be if they are 0-5 and he is still playing like he did yesterday. Getting booed every time he throw an incomplete pass or even steps on the field won't make him any better. I really hope he can come out and improve over the next couple games. If he doesn't the Ravens and Giants will eat him alive.

Hopefully they can alter the offensive scheme to put all the players in the best position to make plays. i.e. no comeback routes for Gordon, no splitting out the blocking TE and throwing to him, no lobs to Benjamin with a tall corner on him, no passes to Little, or Marecic.

Benjamin has speed so focus on that. Bring him across the formation and try to get him the ball in space and use him more on reverse action. Gordon seems to be good on slants and other passes where he just needs to go long so focus on that. MM seems to be the best possession receiver so target him more. Run more plays for Cameron or use him as a third WR some. Richardson still has a couple more weeks of knocking the rust off, but keep giving him the ball, but mix it up on first and second down. Try to find more ways to open holes and use the PA pass more on first down. Teams are going to sell out to stop Richardson because they don't respect the pass so find a way to make them respect it or pay for filling the box.

When was the last time the Brown D lead the league in fantasy pts on defense? Damn they were good yesterday. I still regret that the Browns took Larry Asante instead of Kurt Coleman in the 2010 draft.

I'm gonna ballpark that one and say never.

I was thrilled with the defense. Again they played with tenacity. We need depth up from and a good #2 CB opposite Haden.
Save for the last touchdown pass, Ward wasn't quite the liability in coverage that he's been for some time. I don't think
Hagg is the long term answer at FS, but its far more encouraging seeing him back there as opposed to... Elam :tongue2:

Good points.

Yeah, it's going to be tough because the fan base has had its patience tested so much since Modell flew to Baltimore they're just flat out of it. I can't blame them. Hell, I'm fed up with Jerry Jones after the last 15 years but at least I got 3 SB titles in the 90s (and a couple in the 70s). Browns fans my age haven't seen them win anything.

I joke about Mike Phipps but that really was the beginning of the Browns going from a quarter century of being a top franchise to being a laughing stock. Other than Kosar, and to an extent Sipe, it's been one bad QB decision after another and each one kills you for years. Looks like Weeden is just the most recent one.

To me the real kick in the head for Browns fans in recent years was the 2004 draft. They took Winslow instead of Roethlisberger, presumably because Jeff Garcia and Kelly Holcomb were the answers. Ouch.

I hear ya about Coleman. Dallas has struggled at safety for years and I wanted them to take a flyer on him late in the draft. They passed, and whoever they took instead is long gone.

On the bright side it does seem like the list of critical needs is as low as I can remember. To counter what a previous poster said in the last page or two I believe that if you put a Manning, Brady, Rogers, or Brees as the Browns QB they would be a good team. Not Super Bowl good, but they would have as good of a shot at the playoffs as any of the other teams in their division.

the thing is that they aren't tied to weeden for a long term duration like they would be if they took a qb in the top 5. with his age, and the fact that he was a low 1st, and their 2nd 1st of that draft, they can cut bait with him after 2 years if he shows no signs of improvement.

right now, the browns need a FS, and a RDE. Those are pretty much known on defense. offensively, there are a few questions, namely at the guard spots, and whether the wrs will actually show up.

so even if they opt to roll with weeden after this season, there is no reason why one or two decent FA's and a few draft picks don't allow cleveland to roll out a fairly competent starting 21 outside of the qb spot. then, it will be straight sink or swim for the ginger.

I hated the Weeden pick, but too early to grade it out after one game against a Philly secondary that played like it was supposed to do last year.

Defense looked great. Got to give Jauron a lot of credit for the work he's done with that unit. They are a top-10 defense.

Shurmur is Shurmur. The job is too big for him. He's an offensive coach that has said, even though they hired an OC, that he will take on the majority of the playcalling. Then he better own the atrocious performance we saw yesterday. His decisionmaking continues to be questionable at best. I at least feel pretty confident this will be his last year in Cleveland if things don't improve dramatically.

After 1 game, just like any other year...I find myself wondering what solid OL prospects will be on the free agent market this off-season.

This team might not be able to snag a franchise QB through FA, but please Lord...let them snag a couple OL and maybe a playmaking WR this year. Even with a garbage QB, or a rookie QB...a playmaking WR can stretch the field and create the occasional deep threat (suggesting the QB can get him the ball...lol) to keep 7/8 guys out of the box on every single play.
