Cleveland Browns (2016 thread of unrelenting dumpster conflagration)

Well, Goff and Wentz are going #1 and #2, so it's probably just your Browns fan shell shock showing through.

Paxton Lynch at #8? Or wait until next year (again) for the franchise quarterback.
Well you said the best QBs are found in the top 10 :p

Give up 6 spots (& 2, 4) for a 1, 2, 3 & 4? That's a great deal.

The rams gave up 1, 2, 2 & 3 (gaining a 4 & 6) but they had to move up 14 spots.

BTW, that trade is a steal. Apparently they aren't sold on the QB likely to be there at #2, so kudos to them for not taking a QB just to take one. It would be great to get their "franchise" QB this year, but if he ain't there, you just set yourself back further picking the wrong guy.

Plus, the Iggles are gonna be bad this year. That pick has a great chance at being top-5 next year. With as bad as the clowns look like they're gonna be, they're looking at a strong possibility of having two top-5 picks next year. If they don't end up picking #1, and Watson solidifies himself at #1, they have the ammo to move up to get him.

I know you gotta be pissed about this but honestly I believe this is the better move this year to trade back and hope to get lucky either at the top of the 2nd with Lynch or wait until next year...
It's time for Browns fans to stop pretending that Goff and Wentz are not worth the #2 pick, because both of them are going top two in the draft. In fact, there was a huge market for them, as evidenced by the fact that the Rams and the Eagles paid heavy prices to get them. They are not mid-to-late first rounders, they are not over-valued at #2 ... that is all pure fantasy on the part of Browns fans.

The Browns had a chance THIS YEAR to draft a franchise QB, something that this team hasn't had in 30+ years.

The Browns might not have that chance next year.

There might not be a franchise QB available in the 2017 draft.

The Browns might not have a high enough draft choice in 2017 to get a franchise QB.

And let's say that everything sets up perfectly for the Browns in 2017: The Browns suck their way into the #1 pick (something they haven't done since 2000); and Deshaun Watson is guaranteed to be the next superstar QB (no sure thing for a guy who is only 6'2" 205 lbs). What if Watson pulls a John Elway/Eli Manning and refuses to play for the the Graveyard of Quarterbacks? What then? Trade down, stockpile picks, wait until 2018 or 2019 or 2020....

here's an interesting little factoid. by winning in week 17 against the giants, the eagles ended up 2nd in the NFC East, which makes their schedule this year much more difficult. They now have to play in Seattle instead of SF. Their schedule is the 7th easiest based on last year's winning %, which is heavily skewed by playing a romo-less Dallas twice.

I get it, you believe that Goff/Wentz is a franchise QB, but the fans dont matter... if Hue wanted Goff but Harvard wanted Wentz (which had been reported that they were split with folks on either side of the camp), but I guess that doesn't matter and you would draft whichever guy was there correct? .... how would that work out. FO doesn't like the guy but the HC does... we've seen how that worked out.. and honestly would we want Haslem's input on the pick or who's playing?

just like guys like ryan leaf, achillies smith, jack locker et all just had to be worth where they were selected because one team was dumb enough to take them there...

the fact of the matter is, nobody had any idea who carson wentz was coming into this season, and he was a borderline end of 1st/2nd rounder heading into the senior bowl. he is the epitome of hype and teams tricking themselves into thinking he's a franchise qb.

forcing yourself into taking a qb that you don't really think is worth it because you feel that you have to is non-productive.

Trading up is a very bad practice:

The Browns had a chance THIS YEAR to draft a franchise QB, something that this team hasn't had in 30+ years.

The Browns might not have that chance next year.

There might not be a franchise QB available in the 2017 draft.

Two first round picks is more than enough to trade up. Your last hypothetical could easily be applied to these QBs so that's not particularly compelling.

Wait until 2018? When the best pro prospect in many years comes out in Josh Rosen?
Too early to say.

Deshaun Watson is the presumptive #1 pick in 2017, but he's only 6'2" and 205 pounds, not ideal size for an NFL QB - much more Mike Vick than Cam Newton.
Goff is exactly the same weight as DeShaun, which is why many folks questioned the wisdom of drafting him on a bad Browns team in an incredibly physical division with little to no help around him.

Michael Vick was 6' and a running QB with a lot of arm strength. He was built like a tailback.

You keep talking about Cleveland fans, yet journalists and draft analysts on social medial love this trade and think that Cleveland made out like bandits. Those are people with no emotional investment in finding a savior / franchise QB in a slot they haven't had in awhile.

I know as a Browns fan that is not the way that I am thinking. It is not because I do not believe that either of those guys are worth one of the first two picks in this years draft but the Browns need so much more than just a QB and yes I know that you do not win in the NFL without a good QB. I just do not know if it has to be a franchise QB to win plus I am not sure that either of these guys will turn out to be franchise QB's if in fact that is why you need to win. I just hope that Hue knows what he is doing in evaluating QB's because I do not think this deal what had been made without his okay but that is just me.

I do not think that journalists and draft analysts care if the Browns win or not. At least not like real Browns fans care. Was it a good deal… Yes if you are looking at it from strictly a value chart or by the way that the Browns fleeced the Eagles in this trade. I know as a Browns fan for close to 50 years I want to win more than a lot of Browns fans but I guess I am also willing to wait because I have waited since 1964.
