Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

As a non-cavs fan one of my main questions for the Cavs would b: when LeBron came back the team was instantly a contender. How can you possibly not find a better shooting guard than JR Smith to play starter minutes for 4 years?

Salary cap hell ... a lot of which is/was caused by Lebron ... and the guys represented by him demanding and getting so much money to try to keep him happy. Every time they say “its such a weak supporting cast” in both go around its largely because Lebron doesn’t commit for more than 2 years to max his money (his prerogative) but he doesn’t tell folks he’s there to stay and the cavs are forced to overpay for shitty talent... $100M for Love, $82 or so for Thompson....

To be honest I hope like hell he goes to a team like the warriors so we can all laugh at and national media will acknowledge what a joke the NBA has become.

The 6ers become extremely interesting if the Spurs are willing to deal Kawhi this year. Philly could offer the most for him outside of maybe Boston. Saric, the 10th pick, and Fultz for Kawhi (who doesn't want to play in small market San Antonio anyway) seems fair. Simmons, Redick (or another 3-point specialist if they can't afford him), Kawhi, LeBron, and Embiid is an absolutely terrifying group of starters.

You then have the option to sub Redick for RoCo to generate a supercharged defensive lineup that can switch everything. That team is huge, athletic, and plays Golden State off the floor. In fact, that team is so big, strong, and long that I don't even know how Golden State could match up. If this small and slow (but tough) Cleveland team out-rebounds Golden State badly, I can't imagine what that group could do.

The Hill, Smith, and Korver numbers are all somewhat disingenuous. Hill's contract is only guaranteed for $1 million in 2019-20. Smith and Korver both have buyouts in 2019-20 that are set at less than $4 million each. Tough pill to swallow for this upcoming season, no doubt, but three of those contracts will likely be easy to off-load after.

Sadly, a number of the Cavs showed they will probably never will be able to step up on the biggest stage.. Hill, JR and Clarkson.. having moments does not equate to being counted on for the duration of a playoff...

So if we ASS-U-ME LBJ, Love and TT are back, that consumes $77M; so I defer to @exhawg who is our resident GM; how bout trading Hill and Smith with those huge contracts to teams looking to dump salary.. they can get the savings from lopping those guys off for dimes on the dollar; whether we can fleece other teams for players that can actually help in June .. dunno

But that's our only hope.. if we want to see a meaningful May or June Cavs game for the next 6 years...
