Cleveland Guardindians 2024 (Thread of Apathy)

Vogt has received praise from managers in the past (including Craig Counsell) of rapport with teammates and having the ability to have the difficult conversations with them. For as well as I've seen him talked up, I think this will be an excellent hire. He's young, not too far removed from playing, and a former catcher. I can see him being very relatable to the players and getting the most out of them, just as Tito did.

Hoping some of the bats they have in the minors get some time at the MLB level this season.

They sure ought to. All we've been hearing for the past few years was how loaded the minor leagues were. George Valera and Jhonkensy Noel have been on the 40-Man Roster for two seasons now with zero call-ups to the bigs. Calhoun and Laureano did well enough as stopgaps, but I truly thought those two prospects would at least get a cup of coffee. Now, they've wasted two option years on them and going into their third year, there's talks of acquiring a proven veteran power bat, which would mean another year in the minors if not part of a trade.

Hopefully Vogt can bring some new line of thinking with these youngsters and give them a chance. I felt that was Tito's problem. He liked to rely on veterans that he felt comfortable with instead of playing the young guys and giving them their fair shot. Let's not have another Nolan Jones and Will Benson situation.

And you get into guys like Kyle Manzardo and Chase DeLauter.

Noel has some big time power but he's a strikeout machine who's got no plate discipline as well. He won't be anything more than like another Franmil Reyes if he can't adjust that.

And he did. Noel had a 27.2 K% for the first three months and then a 22.2 K% for the final three. I just figured when the Guards looked to be throwing in the towel that it was the perfect spot to let some younger guys show what they can do, instead of going the waiver/flier trade route.

Franmil was good when his K rate was under 30%. The problem was when it ballooned up to one-third K%, if not worse, for the past few seasons. Noel may very well be another Franmil case, but Cleveland put him on the 40 for a reason and I don't see anything from his past two seasons to suggest that they should abandon him potentially being a part of their future.

When I heard of Vogt being connected with Cleveland, I legit thought they were signing him to catch. They went from having a revered manager they couldn't fire, to a Yes man/fall guy. No way Vogt lasts long-term, clearly he's one the tightwad ownership can use as scapegoat.

Eh at least there's a chance of potential with a guy like Vogt, could be a lot worse, we coulda hired Ron Washington's corpse like the Angels did.

I remember that play. As I recall, earlier that season Vena had taken Omar Vazquel out on a hard, late slide at 2B. Omar was injured and missed some time. I believe Vena didn’t play the rest of that series and avoided retaliation. Next time the Twins came to Cleveland some fans hired a plane to tow a banner over the stadium during a game (before 9/11 so that was permitted then). The banner was something like “Vena wears a dress” or such. Albert provided the player response.
