...and some actual tidbits from Deep Left Field:
http://deepleftfield.com/

The Indians completed the Kerry Wood deal with the Yankees, receiving a pair of minor leaguers, infielder Matt Cusick and RHP Andrew Shive. Don?t get excited, Tribe fans, these guys are strictly throw-ins. Cusick is 24 and can?t hit and Shive is 24, in Class A ball, and had Tommy John surgery. Sweet. No, what you should get excited over is the money the Indians saved. The Yankees ended up picking up about $3 million of Wood?s $3.6 million remaining on his contract. Wood was never going to be worth that with the Indians, good riddance.
Fuck Kerry Wood. But, at least the move did save $3M, which is huge for a cash strapped franchise like our Tribe. (more on that below).

So what did the Indians do with that money saved? Well some of it went to the 2010 draft class, which, for what it?s worth, Baseball America ranked the Indians 2010 draft class as the best in baseball. The Indians spent $9.4 million in signing bonuses on the 2010 class, often going above slot to sign their players (unlike in years past). This is all well and good but we need to start seeing results before we get too excited. However I?m glad the Indians have finally stopped treating the draft like a bastard stepchild.
This is something that has me excited. After over a decade of absolutely porous drafting, we're seeing a major philosophical shift. This is how they're gonna have to build...find good young kids and develop them. I didn't realize BA ranked the Tribe's 2010 draft the best in baseball, but that's exciting after years of it being considered more of a nuisance than as a way to legitimately find talent for your franchise.

Sandy Alomar Jr. is still with the Tribe, as the Blue Jays have hired John Farrell as their manager. Kind of curious to me, as Farrell refused to even interview for the Indians job last year. It makes me wonder if things just got that bad in Boston, Toronto was too good to pass up, or the Indians were just that bad of a situation to make him want to manage just a year later.
I'm glad Sandy is still here and hope he remains. It's nice to have a link to the franchises great teams of the '90's. The Farrell thing is interesting. He was one of the guys I wanted last year (not a knock on Acta, I actually like how he handled the team this year). Wonder what has changed since last fall?

The Indians handed out their minor league awards, with RHP Alex White winning the Bob Feller award for best pitcher and second baseman Jason Kipnis received the Lou Boudreau award for Indians minor league player of the year. These are two of the Indians? top prospects, so it?s good to see these awards go to players that actually factor in to the Indians plans than just organizational filler.
I'm actually pretty excited about White. Everything I've read says he's a legit TOR pitcher. Just hope he stays healthy. I confess to not knowing a lot about Kipnis, but good to know we have a good prospect at 2B on the farm. I don't know how much more Valbuena/Donald I can take. At least I think Donald has a solid future as a utility infielder-type. Valbuena should be shagging flies in C-bus.

about the above:

the draft was a stark contrast as to how it has been handled in years past, namely 2002-2007. it's a smart financial move for a mid market team, especially this one.

with that, i hope cleveland doesn't make any asshole FA signings like jason michaels/david dellucci. those moves are counter productive. bringing in guys like kearns and nix on minor league deals, or pavano, to see if you can catch lightening in a bottle is ok. but by and large, the young kids should fill any positional holes.

looking forward, if and that's a big IF, the bullpen performs as it did down the stretch, they can actually be a decent unit. if they can get good carmona for an entire year, and more consistency out of masterson, the rotation can be average at best, unless a young guy totally blows up. adam miller has returned from the ashes, at least for a while.

PD article about our new GM:

http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2010/10/post_74.html

Near the end is this quote:

Shapiro, who was simultaneously promoted to team president after the season, acknowledges that second baseman Roberto Alomar was traded in 2001 without any clear strategy.
Could there be a better illustration of why this team has, for most purposes, been wandering in the wilderness for the most of the last 10 years? :(

exactly...we do stupid moves like this every single year that hardly ever pan out...just let the younger guys play and see what happens

the promotion of Shapiro is mind boggling

a guy who traded 2 cy young pitchers for a bag of shit basically is given a promotion, genius

I'm not gonna argue that Shapiro did a great job or won those trades but I think you're being overly critical give the financial constraints he was working with.

Lee has been traded twice since the Indians traded him and I would argue that neither package is better than what the Indians got. Carrasco has #2/3 type stuff and finally showed signs of realizing his potential last year. Knapp is the highest upside prospect in the Indians system. Marson and Donald are major league bench players at worst.

If they didn't trade Sabathia, all they would have received were two draft picks. Those two picks would have come in a year where the Indians had a small draft budget and so likely wouldn't have been high upside picks. LaPorta can still be an MLB average 1st basemen if he ever gets healthy. Brantley played well in the 2nd half and could be the CF/leadoff of the future. Bryson is an intriguing RP.

Those seem like decent returns to me and are far from 'a bag of shit'. Obviously they come nowhere near the Bartolo Colon deal but then again teams hold onto their prospect much more tightly these days.

*facepalm*

http://www.indiansprospectinsider.com/2010/10/indians-40-man-review-who-do-they.html

Andy Marte: A year ago Marte was kept around because he was considered the best option defensively at third base and first base for the major league team. Sadly, this still appears true, even with Marte's defense these days decaying to maybe a tick above average. He still has yet to ever show he can hit in the big leagues as he hit .229 with 5 HR, 19 RBI and a .680 OPS in 80 games last year, and in five seasons from 2006-2010 he has hit .218 with 20 HR, 96 RBI and a .635 OPS.

Decision: Because the Indians have such a need at third base, it looks like Marte will survive another roster purge in the short term and go into spring training in competition for the third base job or as the right-handed bat off the bench. The man has more lives than a cat, though like Huffman could be one of the first options to DFA later in the offseason if the Indians acquire a player via free agency or trade.

This is a clear case of extortion. That guy must have pics of Dolan or Shapiro dressed up like Bin Laden, sodomizing a bald eagle on a pile of burning American flags. No other explanation.

the funniest part is how he is seen as a "defensive option"

if you are getting subbed out for defensive purposes for fucking Andy Marte (looking at you LaBusta) you must be beyond shitty on defense
