I'd like to see contracts written so that after an initial honeymoon period, the buyout drops if the coach cannot maintain a win-loss record above some minimum threshold over a rolling three-year window. Maybe start reducing the buyout at .500 and have it drop to zero by .250. Hell, any P5 team should be able to win at least two games a year just by beating the marshmallows they schedule in September. Maybe something like this could be inserted as a condition the first time a contract is renewed. A guy with a winning percentage of 25% over the last three years shouldn't be getting a 20 million golden parachute.
