It was only a matter of time. The top four will get byes, and we get 8 more teams who won't win it.

"We've been told an expanded bracket won't hit until the 2023 season at the earliest. It would actually be tremendously complicated to reconfigure the current CFP contract with ESPN before it expires after the 2025 season."

College Football Playoff 12-team expansion: SEC, Group of Five among winners; Rose Bowl tops losers
Honestly I see no reason to go beyond 8 if they want to expand. But I guess 12 increased the odds the best G5 team doesn't get left out and we have to hear about how the system is rigged while full knowing the system has always been rigged

The same reason all sports playoffs expand: money. Multiple networks will get involved, power conferences will gain more power, and a little guy (or two) can fight for the right to get destroyed in front of a national audience (while making some good money).

I saw that 247sports posted what the CFP would look like this year with 12 teams, and honestly the final would still be OSU-Bama. And Bama would still win.

Depth will be the key to new new era. In the finals last year, look at how many Ohio State key players were missing, even in a shortened season. I know that many college coaches used to be against an increase in the number games because of the toll on players bodies.

Just sayin': I think it is possible that the 12 is just a start for negotiations. Like in most political, contract, and/or labor-management negotiations you ask for more than you expect to get so you can compromise to get what you actually wanted in the first place. The faction that wants to expand negotiates with those that don't want any expansion; "We want 12 and you want to stay at 4; OK, we are willing to compromise at just expanding to 8, etc."

Not so good for Notre Dame.

Screw Notre Dame!!!

“I didn’t go into it thinking 12 and I certainly wasn’t thinking about implications of 12,” Swarbrick said on a conference call on Thursday afternoon. “You needed to keep the broader interest of the game in mind. We all understood that. From my perspective, it was an appropriate trade-off to get a model that I thought was the right one for college football. Even though we don’t play in a conference, I recognize the importance of strong conferences and providing opportunities to the G5.

Swarbrick doesn't seem to mind that Notre Dame gets screwed......

Blue-Chip Ratio 2021: The 16 teams who can win a national title

Put simply, to win the national championship, college football teams need to sign more four- and five-star recruits (AKA “Blue Chips”) than two- and three-star players over the previous four recruiting classes.
