Bob Hunter commentary: Hitchcock peddling Blue Jackets' present, not future

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets were once run by a world-class salesman. Now they are coached by one. The difference, aside from a little thing called "competence," would seem to be the product they were pitching.
The former president-general manager used to sell his teams based on promise -- someday, these high draft picks are going to be great and they're ready to take a step -- and the current coach sells this one on last season's moderate success and some major additions in NHL talent and experience.

Neal C. Lauron DISPATCH
Rookie Derick Brassard opens training camp between Rick Nash and Kristian Huselius on the top line. "I hope it works," Brassard said.

The Blue Jackets were greeted with a loud round of applause yesterday when they took the ice for the first day of training camp in the Dispatch Ice Haus. The clapping gave way to a double-take once the players began going through drills.
All offseason, Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock had touted R.J. Umberger as his No. 1 center between left winger Rick Nash and right winger Kristian Huselius.
But Hitchcock started toying with a different combination in his head last week after watching the captain's practices, and he finally convinced himself to make the switch Friday.

i havent caught a practice yet, id like to but i doubt itll be this week.

nash/brass/beatle juice line looks good. the fear here was would the other two guys shot, they are. this line is a one that can throw tape to tape passes (nash's passing skills are vastly underrated). all three guys can bury the biscuit when they want to. this is a group that you dont want to come seeing on an odd man rush.

that leaves rj freddy and jake on the second line. not clikcing as well. this is a big group, jakes a kid but a big kid. hes the flight weight of the group at about 205. these guys play a very woody hayes type game, smash mouth. tough cycling group, north south game.

adam p got the call up to the big group today. it really is time for him to step up or hell be moved. no doubt in my mind he has some skill (and a laser of a shot). he needs to show that and some grit.

def, they are working on rusty to continue to simplify his game. the team thinks he has the ability to be a shut down type guy. it looks like toots and klesla and hejda and commie. reality is not an offensive group but they move the puch better than lastyears bunch. dont look for many goals out of the group.

raffi has been splitting time with tommy seisito. half and half. more to do with his knee. torres has never heard of half speed. so you need to dial his ice time back, he wont dial his style back...

club feels freddy no needs like of work and regular time in the net. i think theyll give him a regularly scheduled start or try to. if pazzy gets hot like he did for a month or so last year well see if they stick to that philosphy. if mason wasnt hurt, i think... but part of me is glad hell have time to season in cuse.

I have been working on a Blue Jackets Preview and here it is. I hope I didn't make to many mistake.

2008/09 Columbus Blue Jackets Preview

Very nice.

Just a minor tweak to the ratings on the D (I'd give them a B instead of a C+), but other than that it looks pretty good to me.

I don't know if they are going to finish 2nd in the division to the Wings though. I think they'll be 3rd behind Chicago but still making the playoffs as the 8 seed.

Jackets: Defensemen fighting for their jobs

Tuesday, September 23, 2008 3:21 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets open their preseason schedule with a game tonight in Chicago and another on Wednesday in St. Paul, Minn. The games don't count in the standings, but try telling the seven or so defensemen who are fighting to make the club's opening-night roster that they don't count.
"I think these games are very important," second-year pro Kris Russell said. "If you want to be here, you have to show them that you can perform at this level.
"The first three days of training camp are good practice. But this is when they really start watching and evaluating who's playing well."

Jackets notebook: Well-traveled York has the drive to stay here

Tuesday, September 23, 2008 3:38 AM
By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch

Playing for his fourth franchise in as many years, Mike York knows all about the joy and anxiety of starting a new life.
That phrase takes on added meaning this time around as the 30-year-old forward joins the Blue Jackets.
York and his wife, Aimee, are expecting their first child.
"It's something we have wanted for a long time," York said. "My wife is back home in East Lansing (Mich.) and I'm down here playing. It's an exciting time."

How about a B - just to make everyone happy:)

I guess making the playoffs was what I was talking about a few pages ago and their fan base. JO thought I was talking about a run at the Cup but I know they are no where close to doing that but I think with all the moves that they had made in the off-season if they did not make the playoffs there are great to be some very unhappy people in Blue Jackets country.

I agree LitlBuck, it's time for the Jackets to make the playoffs as the natives are restless.

with very few exceptions, the hockey playoffs are when anything can and will happen.

2003 was one of those years. IF LeClaire gets hot and somehow they beat Detroit (figuring Detroit is the prohibitive #1 seed) they could really look like Anaheim minus the blimp-sized goalie if the defense buys into Hitch's system.
