THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Running backs hold special allure to football fans around these parts.
Everyone knows Archie and Eddie and Beanie. Last names are not necessary.
Not everyone knows Harold, but Harold Wells is starting to make a name for himself in Columbus as well. In an Arena Football League game based on passing, players like Wells are showing there's a significant role for the grind-it-out fullback.

The Destroyers' Calvin Russell holds on for a first-quarter reception despite being planted into the wall on a hit by the Predators' Jason Perry.

Orlando Predators rookie kicker John Vaughn had made only 2 of 5 field goal attempts entering last night's game against the Columbus Destroyers in Nationwide Arena.
The longer of his two successful kicks was only 26 yards. So the Destroyers had to like their odds of heading to overtime when Vaughn lined up for a 32-yard attempt with two seconds left in a tie game.

Destroyers hire veteran coach to guide offense

Thursday, April 3, 2008 3:22 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
With a 1-4 record and a struggling offense, the Columbus Destroyers sought to give their team a jump-start yesterday by adding veteran Arena Football League coach Lary Kuharich as offensive coordinator. "I've known him for a long time and he was available," coach Doug Kay said. "I thought he would provide us with the direction, organization and leadership we were looking for in that area."
Kuharich was the offensive coordinator in 2007 for the Nashville Kats, who folded in the offseason.
Director of player personnel Ken Matous had served as the de facto offensive coordinator as well as coaching special teams and receivers. Matous will continue in his other duties.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Lary Kuharich got Columbus Destroyers coach Doug Kay's call for help Sunday morning.
Kuharich loaded up his car and left his Connecticut home for the 650-mile drive to Columbus two days later. It has been a whirlwind for the Columbus Destroyers' new offensive coordinator, whom Kay hired in hopes of saving this season before it's too late.

Cleveland Gladiators let lead slip late on turnovers

Saturday, April 12, 2008Dennis Manoloff
Plain Dealer Reporter
For those who can't let go, John Elway continued to tor ment Bernie Kosar on Fri day night at The Q.
For those who can, the Colorado Crush defeated the Gladiators, 69-66, in an Arena Football League game with no connection to 20th-century NFL playoff games.
John Dutton threw eight touchdown passes and Rashad Floyd made two fourth-quarter interceptions to help Elway's Crush knock off Kosar's Gladiators in front of 15,079.
@StoryAd
Not that he would gloat, but Elway already owns two Super Bowl rings and one ArenaBowl ring.
The Gladiators (3-3) led the majority of the game before losing their third in a row and first in three home dates. They had not played in Cleveland since a Week 2 victory over Utah on March 9.
"Coming back and losing in front of your fans is tough on the city, tough on the team," Gladiators quarterback Raymond Philyaw said.

Cleveland Gladiators find fan support strong on home front

Saturday, April 12, 2008
On Friday, April 11, they were playing pro football . . . inside.
Would anyone be there, or even care?
At the same time the Indians were returning from a West Coast trip and playing Oakland across the street at Progressive Field, the Cleveland Gladiators were kicking off against the Colorado Crush at Quicken Loans Arena.
@StoryAd
"It's a good test for us," said Bernie Kosar, Gladiators CEO. "It's our third home game. The Indians are playing. There's a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert up the street at the Wolstein Center."
Kosar said they had sold about 15,000 tickets, but he mentioned that presale is one game, actually having them in the seats is another. Because former Denver quarterback John Elway is one of the owners of the Denver franchise of the Arena Football League, the Gladiators tried to drag up some of the old Kosar/Elway, Browns/Denver playoff nostalgia from the 1980s.
Cleveland fans know better. Neither quarterback was playing, Elway even stayed in Denver.
If the fans came, it was to see what is becoming Cleveland's version of spring football.

Arena football
Revolving-door defense continues for Destroyers

Sunday, April 13, 2008 3:35 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
They say the NFL stands for Not For Long. Then what's fitting for the Arena Football League? Anyone For Long?
The AFL has long been known for its revolving-door ways. Players churn throughout the league, partly because of unlimited free agency and partly because the AFL historically has shown little patience for a player's ups and downs.

Cleveland Gladiators get victory over Los Angeles Avengers in Arena Football League

Monday, April 21, 2008Dennis Manoloff
Plain Dealer Reporter
The Gladiators' game in Los Angeles on Saturday night was not a must-win, but close.
"We definitely didn't want to go into New York on a four-game losing streak," Gladiators coach Mike Wilpolt said.
Thanks to contributions from numerous players - notably quarterback Raymond Philyaw and receiver Otis Amey - the Gladiators will travel to New York to face the Dragons this Saturday with momentum and above .500.
@StoryAd
Philyaw threw for 411 yards and nine touchdowns, and Amey caught 15 passes for 208 yards and six touchdowns as the Gladiators defeated the Avengers, 83-69, in Staples Center.
The Gladiators (4-3 overall, 2-2 on road) established a franchise record for points. Los Angeles slipped to 3-5.
The victory was a tad bittersweet for Wilpolt, who coached the Avengers' defense under head coach Ed Hodgkiss the previous three seasons. Wilpolt and Hodgkiss also coached together in Indiana.

Arena football: Destroyers might want to do some soul-searching
Coach isn't happy with players' effort following latest loss
Tuesday, April 22, 2008 3:23 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The Destroyers embraced their nationally televised game last night against the undefeated Philadelphia Soul as an ideal showcase to show that their disappointing record was a fluke. Instead, an announced crowd of 14,974 in Nationwide Arena and an ESPN2 audience saw why the Destroyers almost certainly won't get the chance to repeat their surprising playoff run of a year ago.
The offense fizzled after a promising start and the defense failed to keep the Soul out of the end zone on its first 11 possessions in a 76-55 loss.
The loss drops the Destroyers to 2-6 at the season's midway point.
"It's real discouraging," quarterback Matt Nagy said. "Two-and-six is terrible."
With the worst record in the National Conference and four conference teams ahead of them by at least four games, the Destroyers' playoff chances are all but over.
Coach Doug Kay's face was red following a long postgame talk with his team.
Asked what his message was, Kay replied, "Go home and come back with some heart. I'm not seeing people who care."
At least the Destroyers provided some early fireworks. After failing to score a touchdown on their first possession in six of their previous games, the Destroyers scored on their first three plays from scrimmage. Nagy threw touchdown passes of 42, 45 and 45 yards to Calvin Russell, Derek Lee and newly signed C.J. Johnson, respectively.

Gladiators seek home advantage

Friday, May 02, 2008Dennis Manoloff
Plain Dealer Reporter
Gladiators coach Mike Wilpolt needed to work on his team's psyche in the week leading to a game tonight against the Philadelphia Soul.
The Gladiators are coming off their second-worst game of the season, a 56-39 loss at New York. They fell to 4-4.
The Soul is coming off a 57-28 victory over the Dallas Desperados. It moved to 9-0.

Destroyers: A dandy on defense
Landry shines as bright spot during dismal season
Saturday, May 10, 2008 2:57 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Today, Michael Landry is back in the city where he began his professional football career.
The Destroyers defensive end said he will not be feeling wistful.
After a college career at Southern University, Landry signed as an undrafted player with the Kansas City Chiefs. After more than a year on the Chiefs' practice squad and additional stints with Green Bay and San Francisco, he settled into the Arena Football League.
Landry is now a defensive end for the Destroyers, who play at the Kansas City Brigade today. He said he won't be playing "What if?" in his mind.

Im thinking at 2-8 that Coach Kay may be on his way out. It just sucks to see this franchise struggle every year and yet Cleveland gets a team (that was terrible in Vegas) and in year 1 they are already enjoying success. Oh well i hope they get it fixed before the franchise leaves.
