Comparisons between LSU v OSU defensive personnel

...seriously, I think we have a tremendous advantage on the coaching front, despite their "playmakers".

No way was Oklahoma State actually as bad of a team as we made them look in the 2004 Alamo Bowl...Tressel just ripped Miles' nuts off that game.

Can an LSU fan post an honest assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of each of the Tiger starters on both offense and defense in your eyes based on the games you've watched??

It doesn't have to be a novel or anything.

For example, What I am hoping to see would be something along these lines, here's what I would write about a Buckeye:

S Kurt Coleman, So. - Kurt took someones job in the spring and has not looked back. With an early career reputation of being a big hitter, he's a guy you wanna keep an eye on if your an opposing receiver. Kurt will pinch in and help against the run and he will definitely be a part of the blitz package a few times a game.

So yeah, nothing too long just a quick description of the type of player the guys are would be great.

I'll give it a shot, even though this board does seem to be getting a little more tense as game time approaches.

QB -- Matt Flynn -- strengths -- Experience, leadership, game management, mobility....... weakness- Seems to be a "streaky" player, passing accuracy

RB -- Jacob Hester -- strengths -- Experience, leadership, hard-nosed runner, always picks up the tough yards.....weakness -- pretty much a b/w the tackles type of runner, usually not going to break the "big one"

WR -- Early Doucet -- strengths -- Experience, great hands, good route runner, great downfield blocker, good speed, stretches the field for the offense, opens up other receivers.......weakness -- With Early, I'm not real sure. He always seems to make the big catch or play when you need it. I don't think you guys realize how valuable he is to the offense when you dismiss him b/c of his stats.

WR -- Brandon Lafell -- strengths -- size, speed, always seems to find a way to get open.......weakness -- had a case of the dropsies early in the season, we'll se if he's overcome it

TE -- Richard Dickson -- strengths -- great hands for a TE.....weakness -- not the best blocking TE

OL -- strengths -- good size, great run blocking, seem to get better as the game wears on........weakness -- pass blocking has been spotty at best

S -- Craig Steltz -- strengths -- Experience, Leadership, hard hitting, nose for the ball, good w/ run help..........weakness -- pass coverage could be better

CB's -- Jonathon Zenon & Chevis Jackson -- strengths -- Experience, speed, very solid players..........weakness -- no true "shutdown corner", good but not great, seem to get beat for a big play once or twice a game

LB's -- Ali Highsmith, Darry Beckwith, Luke Sanders -- strengths -- Experience, good against the run, Highsmith is outstanding w/ good speed and a nose for the ball............weakness -- Beckwith & Sanders are hit or miss at times, seem to always be at a disadvantage when covering a TE (ANY TE)

DL -- strengths -- Experience, Anchored by Glenn Dorsey, one of the true "STRENGTHS" of the LSU team, solid against the run, great when able to pin their ears back and pass rush.......weakness -- Hopefully none,, honestly I'm not sure, they have not performed well against a true spread offense, QB mobility has also given them problems

Special Teams -- strengths -- Colt David (PK) has a great leg, Trindon Holliday (PR, KR) has a lot of speed,...........weakness -- coverage has been awful at times

There we go, my assessment of the LSU Tigers for you. Hope this is what you were looking for. Blaze away.

:p Seriously though, thanks for the breakdown, 99. Always appreciate quality football talk.

The DL seemed to have trouble getting pressure on Woodson vs UK, which was before Dorsey's mugging vs Auburn. Was this the exception to the rule?

I see you left Williams out as a tailback...sneaky- but we already know about him. :susp:

My take on Highsmith is that he's very athletic, probably the most athletic linebacker LSU has- but his tackling is sometimes a little iffy. He seems to forget to wrap up sometimes...but I only saw two full games and snippets of others. Could be I saw the only missed tackles of his career. What do you think?

Once again, MY take is:

Kentucky game -- You're right, they did seem to have a lot of trouble putting pressure on the QB. I don't really have an answer to give. My only observation would be that Kentucky used a LOT of 4-5 WR sets, and Woodson got rid of the ball quickly when pressure was applied.

Highsmith -- Maybe I'm just looking through my purple & gold glasses (I'm definitely not above it ), but I haven't noticed Highsmith missing that many tackles. He truly is an outstanding player. I think you guys will be able to appreciate watching him play, even if he is on the other side.

I really need to learn how to use the multi-quote function. I did it once but now I can't seem to remember how to do it.......strangely, this reminds me of my marriage. =)

It's right next to the quote button. When you scroll over the icon it says "multi quote this message"...click on all the ones you want, then hit the "post reply" button.
I'm not saying Highsmith should be playing in Maize and corn, just that for all the pub he gets he seems to be a little sketchy at times. You've seen him more than me so if it's not a problem you've noticed and complained about during a game I'm probably off a little in my analysis...it's happened before...once.

Transcript from Ohio State BCS Press Conference Friday:

COACH JIM HEACOCK: On behalf of the
whole defense and Ohio State University, we're
proud to be here and excited to be here.
Expectation level going into the season wasn't
great. And I think these guys sitting up here and
back in the hotel, I think they took a lot of pride in
what they were doing, set some goals for
themselves and, like I say, it's an honor to be here.
We're excited to be here.

The guys have worked hard. They
prepared hard, and we're looking forward to
Monday night against a great opponent. We know
offensively they are very talented offense. They're
very multiple offense, and they give you a lot of
problems. And they've scored 39 points a game
for a reason. And we know that they're a great
opponent.

Cont'd ...
