Convertibles ok for guys?

It's all in fun, gentlemen. It was a quasi-interesting discussion yesterday and I was curious about what board members would think. Hell, I drive a 2003 minivan and a beat up '87 Volvo; neither of which is a convertible, however.

I would own and drive a '69 Mustang convertible, upon further review.

Sushichic, any thoughts?

I think FKA has one for sale.

Not sure of the year or miles. It was his wife's so it must be in good shape.:wink2:

I think I have mentioned I drive a 1997 F150 4X4. Sometimes the windows roll down.

We may have to start these threads with an icon that denotes sarcasm or humor to help some of the posters here.

I was wondering when somebody would put the Cabriolet up there. That thing's a dress on wheels. I suppose you'd have to question the lifestyle choices of any man who drove a car with farfegnugen.

What if you drive the batmobile? Certainly, no one would claim that Batman and Robin are gay.

Having thought about this a little in a discussion last night, my take is that it is almost never ok for a guy to drive, much less own, a convertible. I'm willing to believe that there must be some model that is ok, that is, that doesn't make a guy look like a total cheesy dick with a comb-over and a medallion, gay, or both, but I haven't found one yet. The two closest to ok for me would be a Shelby Cobra (not a repli-car) or an old Mustang. Thoughts?

Dude, please tell me you're not serious here. Do you truly think that driving a convertible makes you look like a homo? Aside from Chevy Cabriolets and maybe Mazda Miatas, most convertibles are not "fagmobiles". Many tough cars have been brought up in addition to the Cobra and Mustang you mentioned ('56 T-Bird, Dodge Viper, '57 Corvette, etc.) which in no way can be construed as pansy-wagons. Do you think that a Prowler is gay-looking? How about an old Chevy Z-28 or Dodge Challenger?

...and a beat up '87 Volvo
I've got a theory on Volvo drivers. They drive "the safest car on the road" because... they NEED TO! About half the cars that cut me off or wander in and out of lanes in front of me without a signal seem to be Volvos.

BTW... I drive a Sebring convertible. I have no comb over and I'm not gay... I just have a better tan than you. :wink2:

No, Mili. My take from some other people's conversation was that in most convertibles a guy would look either like a middle-age crisis dork or gay or, possibly both. I was and am open to suggestions of models that don't fit this portrayal. Of course, I don't think what you drive makes you gay or a dick or anything else. Like I alluded to earlier, if I did I'd be a hippie, soccer mom, at the moment.

And yes, the Prowler, especially in that gaudy shade of purple makes whomever is driving it look like a gay pimp from the '60s.

Cool. BITB, that's the spirit in which the thread was intended.

I've owned (which also means driven) a 68' Ford Fairlane 500 and a 70' Ford Torino, both convertibles, and loved (and totaled) both of them. If anyone had a problem with it, they didn't say anything.

This is ridiculous. What does a convertible, unless it's a baby blue VW bug, have to do with looking gay? Convertibles are awesome. They're a lot of fun. Everyone should own at least one in their life.

And yes, I've got one. A BMW Z3. Nothing cheesy or gay about it.

Not to single you out, Rugby, but I think driving a minivan makes you more gay than the dude driving a convertible. Stick with the volvo...:) Plus, along lines already mentioned, minivan drivers shouldn't drive at all. I drive a full size Yukon, and every single time someone cuts me off or drives 45 MPH in the left lane - you guessed it, it's a minivan. Of course, it's also always a woman driving the minivan when that happens.

I had a convertable mustang a couple cars ago... it was nice, however I doubt I'll pick up another convertable... I like the coupe's better (less wind, and you can actually talk to your passenger). I currently have a Wrangler and it is quite loud... after this one dies, no more convertables for gbear!

My wife and I have an on going joke about middle aged men driving mini vans... they drive crazy or ultra slow, no in between!
