Corey Dennis (QB Coach & Pass Game Coordinator Tulsa)

This is the thing that's being underappreciated here. When Braxton went down, JTB and CJ were ready. When Craig Krenzel went down, Scott McMullen stepped up and caused some to question whether Krenzel should still be the starter. How many times did we breath a sigh of relief knowing we had Kenny Guiton available? What he did against Purdue was legendary. What's worse for McCord is he seems to have regressed over the course of the season.
And who is responsible for the backup quarterbacks not getting meaningful playing time, even in games against easy opponents? This is not a new phenomenon. Last year, it was for the Heisman. There is always an excuse. The same for the O and D lines. Yes, in and out every play or two causes inconsistency, but leaving people in a whole game gets you the 4th quarter in this game.

At the end of the day, it is the Head Coach that is responsible.

Corey Dennis acting as 10th assistant coach

Ohio State has not yet announced any official changes to its football coaching staff beyond the promotion of Ryan Day to head coach. There are still a lot of unknowns when it comes to how Day's first staff will ultimately shake out. But with Day's ascension to the role of head coach and with Urban Meyer not on the road recruiting, the Buckeyes have a 10th assistant coach slot available to utilize.

According to multiple sources, BuckeyeGrove.com has learned that Corey Dennis is filling that 10th assistant coach position right now. Dennis is the son-in-law of the now retired Meyer and has been working within the Ohio State program since 2015. Dennis was an intern with the football program in 2015 and then worked as a graduate assistant in 2016 and 2017 before graduating to a quality control position this past summer.

Can someone contextualize this insightfully before I start to perceive this as just more nepotism? I haven’t read anything about what he’s done because I haven’t come across it.

Who is Dwayne Haskins 'personal quarterbacks coach' at Ohio State?

Dwayne Haskins' "personal quarterback coach" at Ohio State

By Bill Landis, cleveland.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ryan Day got a lot of questions this week about things being back to "normal." The truth is they've been mostly normal for three weeks now. Saturdays were different, but Urban Meyer has been back at practice since Ohio State beat Oregon State in its opener.

So any notion that Day was living in a brand new world this week was probably a touch off base.

But for a month things were different. And while Day was getting pulled in a bunch of different directions as full-time acting head coach, someone had to help him when it comes to coaching Dwayne Haskins and the OSU quarterbacks.

That someone is Corey Dennis, a senior quality control coach and Meyer's son-in-law.

"Yeah basically he's like my personal quarterbacks coach when Coach Day is not around," Haskins said this week. "I can ask him about looks, coverages, different pressures, and he has everything that Coach Day teaches him. He helps me throughout practice, throughout meetings. He helps out a lot."

That puts Dennis in an interesting spot. Haskins in on pace for a special season, and anyone who has a hand in that can ride with him. Just as Day is bound to get a lot of deserved credit for Haskins' play and the numbers the Ohio State offense will put up, Dennis too can build up his resume.

That's how careers start -- just like Meyer's and Day's year ago.

Dennis, a former receiver at Georgia Tech, is in his fourth year on Meyer's staff. The former graduate assistant is now working with receivers and quarterbacks, and has apparently made an impression on Haskins.

  • A guy who played CFB at the P5 level who has studied under Meyer and Ryan Day the past 4 years as a GA is being promoted as a full time assistant.
  • Dwayne Haskins thinks highly of him.
  • His is Urban's son in law
From there it is up to each person's biases/world view to interpret this as wanton nepotism or a talented young guy taking advantage of opportunity.

And not knowing anything about the guys relationship with Meyer's daughter, who's to say he wasnt already on that path before they started dating? Perhaps it's how he met the young lass?

People are too damned quick to rush to judgement.

FWIW, Nikki met him while both were students at Ga Tech. I made the joke when he came here as a student intern that the girl who made Urban sign that pink contract was about to let her husband enter the same profession that was killing her father.

Also on the nepotism front, Louie Addazio (yes, Steve Addazio's son) has left Ohio State to work with Loeffler at BGSU after three seasons here as student intern and GA.

so he's a gold digger just ruthlessly using Nikki to cozy up to Urban and advance his career?

Sickening.

I'm going to tweet this to McFuckmyface

Do we even know for sure that he's going to become a full-time assistant coach going forward, before we commence with the complaining? I am reading this as an interim position that opens up with Urban not going on the road for recruiting, but as with the Davises and Schianos we don't know what's going to happen with this staff for next season yet. He's already on staff in some capacity, I don't see the harm in giving him a little more responsibility in the meantime.

Right on. It was just an initial thought; I wasn’t rendering an immediate judgement on a factual basis or anything.
