A question. Would you participate in a phase 3 vaccine trial? I have that opportunity.
I’m assuming you won’t know whether you’ll be getting the vaccine or a placebo. Given that, I would consider the following before deciding:

Will they try to infect you a little while after you get the shot, or just let you have chance encounters with the virus? What are their guidelines for isolation if/when you believe you’ve been exposed to Covid?

Once in the trial, how long before they notify you if you received the placebo, and how long would it be before you can receive an actual vaccine? Being in the trial sounds like you’d be getting a vaccine before the majority of the country, but if you receive a placebo it could actually delay the timing of you getting the actual vaccine.

Does participating in the trial give you a good feeling for being involved in a potential solution to the pandemic?

Do you or someone you are close to have a pre-existing factor that increases your risk?

Yeah, this is just the end of the beginning.

The main event just started. The fatalities will be lower because we are smarter but the R0 and vaccine will probably intersect now in april or may.

Right. Healthcare was literally stumbling in the dark in March, April and May. If someone contracts it and is hospitalized now, they have about a third the chance of dying as they did six months ago. For those hospitalized in NYC, the rate dropped from 25% to 7.6%. OTOH, we're seeing 3x the number of cases now, so the actual death toll by mid to late December might be as bad as the early part of the pandemic.

The longer you can avoid an infection the better your chances will be. I had it in March with a trip to my doctor for a yearly checkup. I got in in the freakin waiting room! It was not much fun for the few days I had it serious. I fought it off luckily. It was scary.

So the actual death toll may be as bas as the early part of the pandemic, as long as the number of cases/hospitalized remain at three time the rate of March thru May.

At this point I worry most about the healthcare providers. First for their overall health but also for how much we need them regardless of how many beds and machines we have available. Without the qualified personnel, well... The Cleveland Clinic has nearly 1,000 caregivers out due to the virus. That is triple the number out from just two weeks ago.

On the bright side, I came across this article yesterday. I thought it had some great news in it, especially the part about the first mRNA vaccine.

Which ones and how are they "overwhelmed"?

can’t wait for all the tik tok dance videos from all the overwhelmed healthcare workers we got in April and March.

my dad had a heart scare in April. i could not visit him. he said the hospital was virtually empty in his 3 day stay. same time period that DeWine was telling us how crowded hospitals were.

just my .02. not denying the virus or anything like that. just saying what he saw and how many fucking dance videos the overwhelmed had time to do.

Nobody other than teachers talk so much about the workload. A pandemic ..your a health care worker..this should be what you live for. Firefighters fight fires. Soldier fight wars. If you don’t like this healthcare workers you’re in the wrong occupation.

Here’s COVID Hospitalization data as of Sunday. It’s over 83k now, when the two previous peaks were around 60k. Survival rates are better now.

U.S. coronavirus hospitalizations keep breaking records

Data: The COVID Tracking Project; Chart: Axios Visuals

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the U.S. has reached new record highs every day since Nov. 10.

Why it matters: Governors in states like North Dakota and Illinois have been warning about overburdened hospitals and limited beds for weeks.

  • Hospitals in Utah say they are already informally rationing care, although no one has been ejected from ICUs yet.
Of note: Overall, patients who are hospitalized with COVID are reportedly surviving at higher rates than in the spring and summer, per STAT News. Many patients are younger, and effective treatments are being used more frequently.
