Here in Quahog, they have free, self-test kits at any local library.

Not sure about AZ.

I work with Google folks a lot (GCP partner). They sent their employees self testing machines that allows the self testing to be certified. Apparently you can have a web-cam monitored test that allows the results to be certified as if a lab did it.

Pretty cool.

I may have to go get tested tomorrow. I woke up with a sore throat, my nose started running a bit later, some coughing and sneezing, body aches, head aches and feeling loopy. I'm fully vaxed so perhaps it's just a common cold.

You’re right to get tested because of your symptoms. But don’t worry much, it sounds like a head cold that’s going around.

I either have to go to urgent care or CVS, they have 20 minute tests. I woke up feeling a little better but not 100%. It feels like the flu but not sure if covid flu. We'll see
Go to the CVS drive thru. It’s not the PCR test but the easy antigen test. That’s where my son got tested and it came back positive.

I literally took him in for an earache because he has ear tubes and the Minute Clinic nurse said “Let’s just test him anyways since Thanksgiving is tomorrow and sure enough he tested positive!

Pretty sure many cvs locations have the pcr test with results in about 24 hours (ymmv).

As for needing a super rapid test, the ones they hand out at the quahog library used to come with a webcam monitored expert to make the testing more official. These aren't as reliable of tests but sometimes you need to have information faster.

3 weeks ago after flying and not sleeping enough, started showing basic cold symptoms. Turned out to be negative, but it was helpful to be able to test negative immediately and then double check via PCR test afterwards. That way we could keep doing some of our activities but be cautious until we had the PCR results. We ended up paying for the rapid test, $10 each, from CVS because we wanted it immediately. But I think you can get it for free there and elsewhere. And we went back later that day for a free PCR test via drive through

Booster shot on Pfizer was similar to last time, maybe a little milder. Last time I popped it 99 fever and hallucinated overnight but once I hit that 24-hour mark I was okay kind of the way you feel at lunch time when you know you're going back to school or work the next day.

The Mrs had a tougher time with the booster shot. She had Lyme disease when she was younger so it triggers some of those symptoms. She popped a fever and slept a crazy amount but was feeling better after about 30 to 36 hours.it just took a little longer for her to stabilize. Both cases were like a mild onset of a flu that never truly arrived.

Understood.
Part of the reason I ask is that there's a high likelihood of traveling to Italy in January for business. Wasn't sure what travel tests yield the truest results.
Also keep an eye on the news to see if they update the requirements for people coming into the country how specific the timing of the test has to be.

If you check online, there are testing locations popping up near airports to do rapid tests for travel, with results in as little as two hours. The sad part is I've seen pricing vary from around $175 - $350+. But as @jwinslow noted, I believe some places are requiring test results to be within 24 hours of travel.

One other thing of note - we had a friend recently return to Argentina, which required testing within 72 hours of arrival. Unfortunately, she missed her connecting flight to Argentina so spent a night/another day in Houston, which meant she was beyond the 72 hour window when she arrived. Fortunately, when she arrived they did not closely look at her documentation and let her through as opposed to a mandatory multiday quarantine.

If you Google covid testing, depending on your area, they often list a lot of the local places and who has availability that day. That's how I was able to find something within a few hours. The first five places weren't available that day but the sixth one was.

Same deal for the vaccine booster

FWIW.. couple months back I was sure I had it... all the classic symptoms... I was a mess...
rcvd multiple tests.. Doc said Rapid-something-test would give results in a day or 2 'but only 60% reliable" !!!
other test, tested for 74 diseases... I did both.. Negative on the Rapid but came up with two positive viruses ... not any of the current Covid strains at that time??? but I hit every checkmark on symptoms including 104 temp

within a week, I also came down with Lyme... so @jwinslow , your post about wife and booster impact has my attention...
interestingly, Lyme symptoms are amazingly similar to Covid... I was a mess but luckily significant improvement in 2 weeks
However my blood pressure and heart went severe haywire for weeks... sucks to be old
