Cory Lidle (Official Thread)

Ugh...that might be one of the worst pieces I've ever read. I'll never understand the need of some people (including this writer) to find meanings in things (like numbers) that simply aren't there. This kind of stupidity is an insult to Munson and Lidle.
Take yesterday's date (10-11-06), flip it upsidedown (90-11-01), now switch the first 2 numbers with each other (09-11-01).

Oh. My. God.

I have to partially agree with Tibs on this one.

The wall to wall coverage by the media and ESPN devoting basically all of it's Sportscenter telecast to this story was absolutely ridiculous.

Just b/c something happens in NY, the news media has this false assumption that people in the rest of America really care that much.

Guess what, we don't.

I'm sorry someone lost their life, baseball player or not, but the never-ending news coverage got really old.

Deduce whatever you want - your inability or abilty to deduce my posts doesn't really bother me.

Perhaps your ignorance and misuse of the english language should bother you then. Eg, the only thing that one could "deduce" from your sentence fragment is that he is indeed a Yankee. What inference you can draw is another matter, but I assure you the one you assert is a stretch with even the sloppiest of thinking.

Congrats. You've now made three of the stupidest posts Ive seen all in one thread. I think we should make an award for this and call it "The Tibor". Kind of a Buckeye Planet version of the Darwin Awards.

Next up:

lvbuckeye tells us how Corey Lidle is a secret member of Bush Co. and his mission yesterday was to drum up support for the Iraq War and Republicans who are about to lose their seat on the hill.

Ladies and gentlemen.... as promised..... Your October Surprise.

This story is very interesting. Maybe it doesn't deserve all of the attention it is getting, but consider this:

1. It's a plane flying into a tall NYC building. CNN was covering this story extensively before we found out:

2. Corey Lidle, a pitcher for the Yankees, tragically passes away in freak accident, leaving wife and 6-year old child, which leads to this:

3. The pilot of a plane that crashed into a NYC skyscraper was none other that Yankee pitcher Corey Lidle, who tragically passes away at the age of 34, leaving a wife and a 6-year old child.

Number One is a big story on a slow news day, and yesterday was that. Number Two is a top story on ESPN, and probably even somewhat of a breaking news story on CNN. The combination of 1 & 2 creates what we saw yesterday.

Can I say that I really needed all the coverage? No. But it is what it is, I understand how it got that way.

I can undestand the media caring if Randy Johnson or Curt Schilling died. These are famous people.. But who the hell cares about Corey Lidle? He's just a guy who died in a plane crash today. The only thing "interesting" in this story was that there was concern it was a terrorist attack and it ran into a building. Corey LIdle's invovlement is meaningless.

Wow. I'm sure Cory's family really appreciates your respect & sensitivity! Your attitude is shameful.
I'm not a Yankees fan, but I am a baseball fan in general and I am very sad for the loss.

I can't believe I'm coming to Tibor's defense here, but I seriously doubt Lidle's family cares what some guy in Pittsburgh has to say on a Buckeye message board about what happened.

And to a certain extent, maybe Tibor is right. Lidle wasn't a dominating pitcher in the sense that would have warranted round-the-clock coverage from ESPN. It may seem insensitive to say that, but people die everyday, many under tragic circumstances, and they don't even get nary a blurb on local television sometimes.

It would be a head scratcher for a normal person to get that much coverage, and it's a head scratcher that Lidle received this much coverage.

LIdle's family should be grateful that even though he played for several teams in his career, he died as a Yankee, which means his death will get 1000 times more attention than it deserves.

I found it amusing as well that TV guys today talked about the As and TIgers playing yesterday thinking about Lidle, trying to put the tragedy out of their heads. While several of the A's players were teammates with the guy and I'm sure feel his loss, do you really think that Justin Verlander gives a shit? Why should he? If a plumber in Pittsburgh dies in an auto accident, does that mean every plumber in the country who didn't know him should be in mourning when they go to work?

Most of us, had we chosen to make the point that Tibor is making, would have simply said something like "This story is getting more coverage than it deserves because it was in NYC and he was a Yankee."

But that wouldn't achieve the reactions he tries to provoke.
