Criteria for a Successful Season (split from tOSU Recruiting Discussion)

It is important because that's part of what separates us. I could see us under Day in the new format lose to scum half or more of the time, always make the playoffs, sometimes make the final, and never win it; basically the college version of the Jim Craig Buffalo Bills. That would be great most places. I think the majority of the fanbase, though, would prefer beating scum almost every year, making the playoffs regularly and even losing early, and winning it now and then. Right now, it looks like it's easier for us to make the playoffs than to be beat scum. That's not ok. Like you say, Thanksgiving matters.

That is definitely the preference. Beating the tar out of scUM, always having 1 foot on the conference title, and 1 national championship a decade is perfection.
The "deep run" model also isn't sustainable. It means no trophies from the Conference (can't get past that team), and no trophies on the national stage. Recruits lose interest when your HC becomes established as a guy that can only beat up on Northwesterns and Indianas.

Having lived through the Cooper years, I get the concern that we would every return to those awful years (and performances)

That said there was another coach at OSU that started 1-2 against Michigan. He even was under pressure from those that did not think he was a fit as coach.

Woody beat Michigan in his fourth attempt and that team went on to win the national championship.

My point is let's see what happens.

It was Jim Kelly. but I agree with you. I don't think the lifeline of an expanded playoffs is going to be enough if he can't get back to beating tsun.

@sflbuck is right though, Woody's career at OSU was saved by a goal line stand in The Game but it was a last minute reprieve. They were going to fire him for the start he got off to in the first 3+ years. Day has a chance with this CFP and next year. I hope to Woody he turns it around starting tonight.

Interesting sidenote, Woody's second loss to SCUM (1953 in Ann Arbor), OSU was actually favored. But 5 interceptions and tackling that in media accounts of the game was described as "miserable" sealed their fate 20-0.

It's stupid stuff like this (5 interceptions in 1953 vs 5 long TD's this year) that give me hope that this team can maximize their potential, just like the 1954 team did.

We will see.
