David Lee Roth is the quintessential rock n roll front man. Had VH stayed together, they would easily be one of the biggest bands of all time.

That being said, the Hagar years weren't bad - there were a lot of good tunes.

Van Halen's peak is still their first album. The others were great (love all the early years albums through 1984), but the first one is still the best.

5150 came out about the same time that I graduated from high school so I'd already accustomed myself to hearing DLR sing their songs. I do like some of the Hagar stuff but it's not Van Halen, it's Hagar solo with the old VH as his band.

I saw Van Hagar in concert and it was a great show, but it didn't compare to the classic awesomeness of the DLR era. Having Sammy in the band was like having your dad chaperone your group at the prom. Everything toned down, and Van Halen lost that classic 80s rock-n-roll band vibe.
