DB Cameron Martinez (transfer to Boston College)

Third-year nickel safety Cameron Martinez went from backup to starter in a matter of days last week.

After it became known to the team that graduate Tanner McCalister, Ohio State’s normal frontman at the position, would be unavailable against Toledo Sept. 17, Martinez received word that he’d be starting against the Rockets.

“I think that’s why you come here,” Martinez said. “You go through all those things (in the offseason), trials and tribulations and just to be able to let it all out on the field, just have fun. For a minute I had to kind of take a moment, just to see what was around me. Just like the atmosphere and the environment, I was just taking that all in as well.”

Behind its regular starting trio of McCalister, fourth-year Ronnie Hickman and fifth-year Josh Proctor, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day feels confident in the storeroom his team has at safety.

“We do have some depth at that position, which I think is going to be important as we head in

As they say in football it's "next man up"......

According to Ohio State safeties coach Perry Eliano, who has now helped hone the Michigan native’s skills for more than a year, Martinez is flourishing in the highly-competitive environment the coaching staff has crafted this spring.

“He's kept his head down and worked. And when his number's called, he's made plays,” Eliano said. “One thing about here, there are no entitlements. Everybody's got to come to work every day. We've been competitive in everything we've done, whether it be academically in the offseason, in the weight room, nutrition, in the meeting room, everything. We're competing in every facet of our players' lives. And right now, he's thriving in that environment, and he's answering the bell. So he's got to continue to do that.”

Ryan Turner and Cam Martinez.

Might be Buckeyes starting at each corner for Hafley.

They picked up a really nice portal RB too which should work well with Constellanos.

Hoping Hafley can continue building on the bowl from this year and get some consistency going. Still love that dude and like that we’ve become a pipeline for him with good kids who may just not have enough to see field consistently at OSU.

I feel exactly the same, Halfley did a lot for us when he was here and he is a great coach. Plus we don't play BC, so it is easier to just root for him. Good choice by both of Turner and Martinez.
