DB Donald Washington III (Official Thread)

Wow. It'd be great for Donald to go in the first, but I don't see it. Still, high praise.

Agree. Great to hear such praise, but I find it difficult to believe he will go in the first round.

D-Wash will be this years Donte Whitner. What I mean is that he will suprise A LOT of people with a high draft (likely second round), and he may even garner some "boo's" and doubts, but he will back up his stock on the field next year.

Under Armour Rewards Washington

Under Armour was the presenting sponsor and official supplier of gear at the NFL combine last weekend in Indianapolis.
In an effort to acknowledge top athletic achievements, Under Armour challenged the combine participants to achieve certain benchmarks in the various drills. Those drills included the 225-pound bench press, the vertical leap, the broad jump, the cone drill and the shuttle.

The athletic supplier announced it would donate 100 pairs of cleats to the high school alma mater of any athlete who could eclipse specific performance benchmarks while wearing Under Armour gear at the combine.

One of the eight Ohio State athletes at the combine was able to beat one of the Under Armour benchmarks.

Cornerback Donald Washington, a product of Indianapolis Franklin Central High School, exceeded the benchmark of 41 inches on the vertical leap with a jump of 45 inches.

Pro day: The "real" times
OK, we've got a pretty good handle on the 40 times from pro day today. The times I'm going to list here are a range, where most of the 29 teams had the players....it doesn't mean some teams didn't have a guy a few ticks faster (or slower), but these are the best, most reliable ranges we can give you:

DONALD WASHINGTON: 4.50 to 4.54. One team had him 4.60. He had a 4.51 at Indy, so it wasn't any better. Still, his impressive drills at the combine will remain in coaches' minds.

Some Pro Day leftovers

Donald Washington has some attitude. The early-entry junior is supremely confident in his abilities. He does not second-guess his decision to come out, and was not surprised at all by his vertical jump (45 inches) and broad jump (11 feet 3 inches) at the combine, both of which were the best of the 300-plus players invited.

I guess the attitude is a good thing. Asked if his combine performance was satisfying, his lips curled:

"It wasn?t satisfying at all," he said. "For me to say I was satisfied, I would?ve came out here in my nightgown and not did anything (on pro day). I wasn?t satisfied, I know I had a lot of room for improvement. Did I have the best vertical and best broad jump? Yeah, but there's still room for improvement. I wish I would?ve jumped a 48. I'm not satisfied with anything. If I was, I think I would be selling myself short."

Every single one of these kids ran the 40 in the same time that they reportedly ran it in HS: Laurinatis at 4.7, Washington at 4.5, Jenkins at 4.5, Robo at 4.5. They either didn't improve their 40 times that much in college or their HS speed was hyped. Any ideas?

Could it possibly be that college S&C mainly improves your quickness and strength, but not necessarily your 40s? I'm looking at Ted Ginn and I don't think he was any slower as a Freshman than he was as a Junior. Same for Beanie.

They often put on weight too. Adding weight and keeping speed is a plus. Of course using any HS numbers is a joke.

Profiles start popping up during junior school years with 4.4, 4.5, etc. Look at the numbers from san antonio and the all american combine for underclassmen. Sure the track was slow, but there were some very slow times there across the board.

One major college under-the-radar prospect is Ohio State's Donald Washington. He's what scouts look for both physically and athletically, plus he played at a first-round level during several games in college. I can't believe a player with Washington's potential would be picked later than the second round, and don't be shocked if some team pulls the trigger during the latter stages of Round 1.

Three cornerbacks and one outside linebacker visited the Steelers yesterday as they continue to inspect draft prospects. The cornerbacks were Donald Washington of Ohio State, Don Carey of Norfolk State and Sherrod Martin of Troy. Lawrence Sidbury, an outside linebacker from Richmond, joined them at the Steelers' UPMC training facility.

15. Donald Washington, Ohio State 6-0, 195 (Jr.)

A disappointment at Ohio State, he was suspended from the team for an early stretch and he lost his starting corner job. In a bit of a shock, he chose to leave early rather than come back to try to boost his stock by establishing himself as a No. 1 corner, and then came the Combine. With excellent size, he ran a respectable 4.5 and was lightning quick in the agility drills, but he opened up everyone's eyes by leaping 45" in the vertical jump (tops for the Combine) and 11' 3" in the broad jump. However, his reputation for a lack of physical play on the field was hurt more by only coming up with seven reps on the bench. There are huge, screaming red flags about his character and his ability to work to be a starter, but the raw skills are too great to not take a flier on.
