DB/LB Chad Hagan (official thread)

Hagan to make season debut tonight for C-M

Chad Hagan didn't know what to believe after doctors diagnosed the Canon-McMillan High School senior with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome in April.

Hagan heard his football playing days and opportunity for a college scholarship were over because of the heart disorder, which created a rapid heartbeat for the two-sport standout. Others said he might miss one year, maybe two.

Then, just days after Hagan made an oral commitment to play football at Ohio State University, his condition and the news drastically improved.

Doctors told Hagan, a running back and safety, a return for Canon-McMillan's first Great Southern Conference game on Oct. 2 at Upper St. Clair was possible. Surprisingly, Hagan was cleared last week to play football and that's what he'll do for the first time this year when Canon-McMillan (1-1) plays at Woodland Hills (1-1) tonight in a non-conference game.

"I feel extremely blessed," Hagan said Thursday. "To go through the journey I've been through and be able to play, like I said, I feel extremely blessed."

Hagan realizes his fortunes, which is why he plans on honoring two friends.

One of Hagan's wristbands will be dedicated to the late Jim Montecalvo, the son of Canon-McMillan coach Guy Montecalvo. The other is for Kyle Wilson, who played football at Pittsburgh Central Catholic and died last year at the age of 17.

"Jimmy and Kyle were great friends. As I was going through this I felt like somebody was pushing me through," Hagan said. "And I know it was them."

Over the past week, most of the pushing came on the practice field and Hagan couldn't be happier.

"I was pumped last week just finding out I could play again," Hagan said. "I'm not worried about being too excited. I'm excited before every game."

Injury Helped Save Hagan's Life

By Adam Jardy

The past several months have been trying ones for Pennsylvania speedster Chad Hagan. As he was being recruited, the three-star safety prospect had to handle a life-and-death situation that was discovered thanks to an unrelated injury. BuckeyeSports.com has the full story on Hagan's situation and full recovery.

Talks about how his condition was discovered and how he's feeling since the surgergy to correct it. There's a bit about the type of person Hagan is and how he's been elected a team captain.

Sounds like a good one!!

Oh thank goodness he's back! We're rooting for you Chad!

Yes his ratings are going to shoot up. Measurables? Check. Potential? Check. Production? That's the only thing holding him back because of all the games he's had to miss.

He will be a great one.

Last night was the most impressive, I've seen Chad play. Absolutely ran right over the linebacker on the way to the second touchdown. Was playing safety on d and was flying all over the field. He also had a 30 yard touchdown reception called back for offensive pass where he blatently pushed off at the end of the half. Still was a sweet catch regardless though.

I sat next to a kid last night who has played basketball with Chad since the 6th grade who told me two things though: (1) If Chad wasn't lazy, the sky would be the limit (although he conceded that he looks more determined than he has ever seen him since the heart condition); and (2) he likes to play up minor injuries, to which he referred to the hamstring injury last year. Still last night was the first time that I've seen him and Mike Hull play on the same field and where Chad looked as good if not better than Hull.

Canon-McMillan visits Mt. Lebanon

...

In addition to Hull, who is a standout linebacker on defense and a Penn State recruit, the Big Macs boast Ohio State-bound Chad Hagan and Alex Schram in its ever-improving secondary. While Hagan rushed for two scores of 1 and 6 yards against the Highlanders, Schram picked off two passes and returned them 37 and 40 yards for touchdowns.

One of the Big Macs who stayed home was top rusher Mike Hull, which left Chad Hagan to carry the load. Hagan rushed 16 times for 77 yards, including the game's first touchdown, but the Blue Devils eventually wore Canon-McMillan down.

"The kids we had that were healthy practiced hard, but I've never, in 30 years, had a week quite like this," Canon-McMillan coach Gut Montecalvo said. "Chad, he had a great effort in the first half, and he couldn't even get his breath because he was dealing with a bronchial infection. So, we kept him out (in the second half)."

Hagan gained the majority of his yardage on Canon-McMillan's first drive. The Ohio State recruit carried eight times for 61 yards and capped a 74-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown score, putting the Big Macs up, 7-0

Bethel Park 38, Canon-McMillan 24
No. 4-ranked Bethel Park (7-1, 4-0) remained the frontrunner in the Great Southern Conference after defeating host Canon-McMillan (3-5, 1-3). The game was knotted, 17-17, in the second quarter, but a pair of touchdowns from Nick Kwiatkoski helped the Black Hawks run to the win. Kwiatkoski scored on a 3-yard pass from Matt Bliss, followed by a 2-yard touchdown run to put the Black Hawks in front, 31-17. Kwiatkowski also scored on a 90-yard kickoff return in the first quarter. Bre Ford added 140 yards and a touchdown. Division I recruits Chad Hagan (Ohio State) and Mike Hull (Penn State) each scored for the Big Macs. Hagan ran for a 74-yard touchdown and Hull on a 5-yard run.

RECRUITING WATCH | CHAD HAGAN
Prospect overcomes heart ailment

PLENTY OF HEART: Ohio State recruit Chad Hagan (above) of Canonsburg, Pa., is playing football again after surgery this summer helped him overcome a serious heart condition. (Christopher Horner, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)
Chad Hagan sat in the car and cried the whole way home from the doctor's office.

The high school junior from Canonsburg, Pa., had just been told that because he had a heart condition known as Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, he would never be able to play sports again.

That would mean the end to his dream of playing college football, as the 6-foot-2, 230-pound running back/linebacker was being recruited by several major schools, including Ohio State.

By the time he reached home that day in April 2009, though, Hagan's attitude had changed.

"I never accepted the fact that I wouldn't play sports again," he said. "It was rough, but I kept going to different doctors. I needed at least somebody to say maybe there was a chance."

Finally, he found that doctor. One heart surgery and five anxious months later, Hagan returned to the football field for his senior season.

"It was a relief and really joyful to be able to get out on the field with my teammates again," he said.

Canon-McMillan

The Big Macs return four starters and eight lettermen from last year's team. Many of those players were first-year starters as Canon-McMillan finished 10-12 coming off its first appearance in the PIAA playoffs.

Junior guard Kionte Davis (15.1 points, 5.7 rebounds) and senior forward Chad Hagan (13.4 points, 5.2 rebounds) were all-district selections last year.

While Mt. Lebanon, with virtually its entire line-up back, may be, ranking as the team to beat in the district, the Big Macs mirror the Blue Devils in the fact that they return four starters, including Chad Hagan.

Hagan recovered from Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. The condition caused a rapid or irregular heartbeat and forced him to miss the early part of the football season. An Ohio State football recruit, Hagan averaged 13.1 points a game last year.

On Hagan coming out to play his senior season Bell said, "will be a big boost for us."
