DB Rocco Pentello (official thread - transfer to Ashland; transfer to Otterbein)

I really like this offer...

After watching his film, it is obvious his ability to break down a defense, and to lead an offense. Well know he will be a safety so he will already understand alot of what the qb is thinking and he can be the leader on defense. Also he does not shy away from contact as you can see in some of his runs, which is good for a safety that will be a hard hitter.

Also he has the speed with the 4.4 and the size at about 200. There is a picture earlier in the thread that shows just how cut he is.

Also you have to love these offers, maybe if it wasnt for the injury he might of got the offer earlier in the season, b/c alot of times the staff wants to see the first couple games of film and then evaluate them, but this time they had to wait b/c he got injured and then they made a decision after the season.

Also anytime you have a local columbus kid that wants to be a buckeye and does all he can to earn that goal you know he is going to work his butt off to get on the field.

Congrats to Rocco and Rocky, I am sure after sending all of the kids we (WSHS) did to tOSU over the years that Rocco was destined to be a Buckeye. I remember in camp ('94 graduate) every year when he was only "yay high" running around and causing trouble with Brittany. The good old days make me feel old now. Go get 'em, Roc.

a poster from rivals familiar with the pentello family said that both wvu and msu inquired about having him visit each respective school this weekend, and there would be written offers waiting for him if opted to do so.

Westerville's This Week Newspaper had a great article about Rocco and his recruitment, dated December 7th. Unfortunately, I don't know of an internet link I could give for the article. Here's my favorite snipit from the article:

Coach Rocky Pentello: "(Former Cincinnati coach Mark Dantonio, who since has taken over at Michigan State) came up to me (during OSU's summer camp) and said, 'Rocco's got the best feet and hips here'. I think they were surprised by how quick he was. Ohio State said they really liked the way he was able to change direction and break on the ball and just wanted to see him play a couple of games."

Career Stats (4 year starter at QB):
Completed 422 of 674 passes for 6,228 yards and 71 TD's
Rushed for 2,931 yards and 38 TD's on 396 carries (7.4 ypc)
*-Note: Records despite broken ankle during 6th game of season vs Olentangy

WSHS records for total TD's (109), points (654), passing TD's (71), career passing percentage (63%), season percentage (65%), all-purpose yards in one game (437 yards), and rushing yards by a QB in one game (226 yards). The last 2 came in a 41-24 win over Grove City last season.

Also, mentioned that we're looking at him as a CB or S, that he would have committed to MSU had OSU not offered, that he's been off of crutches since Nov 20th, and that he credits his tight-knit family and Christian faith with getting him through the last couple of months. Sounds like a Tressel recruit! From one WSHS grad to another, congrats Rocco!! You've been a pleasure to watch from the stands and you've helped turn WSHS into the OCC dynasty of old. Very deserving! Get well soon!!

I don't want to sound whiny, but for some reason this struck a cord with me. I think Coach Tressel looks for football players with character and that transcends how tight-knit a family they may have. Look at the Troy Smiths and the other players on the team that came from broken families, but have overcame so much to succeed. I think a Tressel recruit is a fantastic athlete that also has the potential to be a fantastic man, notwithstanding the situation they were born into.

As for Rocco, he is taking a beating on some boards. The last recruit that I remember taking such a beating was Kirk Barton. And that guy didn't work out at all...oh wait.

Great post.

I forked this thread on the Open Discussion board so we can keep this thread about Rocco.
