DB Shaun Wade (1st Team All American, New England Patriots)

Got ejected for playing football. Peak 2019.

It was 50/50 to me. My biggest issue is ejection is way too penal for a play he didn’t intend to happen.

Did he lower his crown? Yeah.

Did Lawrence, who is 6’6”, and towers over Wade dip down and put his head in Shaun’s strike zone? Absolutely.

If Lawrence stays upright, Wade actually strikes him in shoulder/chest area and no targeting is called.

The ejection is ridiculous. 15 yards and a flag is plenty. The NFL understands this. It’s unfortunate college has drawn this line in the sand.

But Shaun is special. What will always eat at me is how the defense had played to that point (shutting Clemson out) and how well the secondary was playing and confusing Lawrence. As soon as he leaves game, it just handcuffs what Hafley and Mattison can do....not a knock on Amir or Proctor, but they don’t bring what Wade does....and it largely changes what our coordinators can call.

Targeting needs a major overhaul and everyone knows it. No one should be getting ejected for a first targeting call unless it was malicious and intended to injure.

Second, why is this the only penalty that the booth can review without the refs throwing a flag? If this bullshit is going to get reviewed coaches should get a challenge to other penalties like the bullshit hands to the face on the exact same play.

Third, if Lawrence pops up right away it likely isn't reviewed.

Fourth, if it happens to a running back it likely isn't reviewed.

the whole rule just needs to be changed.

This is precisely the problem with the rule, as it stands. There’s no gray area for football plays like this happening. Targeting was implemented to prevent players from launching at people like torpedoes.

I would suggest they adopt something similar to flagrant fouls in basketball, but that would give replay officials even more power. Two fouls and you’re gone. If it’s deemed severe enough, call it Targeting-II, which is an immediate ejection. If it’s a football play, enforce the penalty, but the consequence isn’t as severe.

I’ve been a critic of this rule since it’s implementation, citing plenty of calls from around college football (not just Ohio State).

i 100% disagree with your stupid opinion. we need to treat involuntary manslaughter the same as first degree murder.

If I understand the rules of targeting, Wade needed to slow down drastically from his corner blitz as he was running full bore (play call I loved) and tackle Lawrence between the hip and thigh area. Conversely, he could have used a bump-style tackle which we all love on a 6’6 220 QB.

I don’t see any other way he could have avoided the targeting considering Lawrence was turtling and had his hemet perfectly angled towards the angle that Wade was coming in from.

His ejection, what ever your opinion of the call was, absolutely killed us on defense. True fans understood what this kid meant to our defense. I think Okudah was the best player on the field last night, and Wade was second. Chase didn't impact the game like those two guys did. Hats off to Arnette too.

Wade may be the most under rated player I have seen at OSU in a long time. He is an absolutely baller in the secondary and irreplaceable.
