Greg Schiano (HC Rutgers Scarlet Knights)

Well, the scheme is based largely in having the best Dline in the country and the best individual player. When Nick went down, the adjustments were just brutal to achieve.

They weren't perfect before Nick went down but there was a learning curve still in effect games in that would have caught up by game 5 or 6 and Purdue never would have happened. You just don't lose a Bosa and recover in the same season.

That said, the LB's on the line of scrimmage for so long was awful and for some reason the guys just seemed as if not to know their assignments. Why? Million Dollar question right there. Also, why did it take so long to get Brenden White reps? The only thing about incumbent coaches that gets my dander up is they sit too long in their comfort zones even when they see the dumpster burning. Meyer was guilty of it too. Only coach you see making those changes regularly is Saban. That's the way it goes.

I dont hate the job Schiano has done here and if he stays we'll be fine. I'm also ok with a "youth movement" and we get the best and brightest new faces in CFB. Either way, GO BUCKS!
So... all fingers point back to Davis.
Or maybe it's a foregone conclusion that Davis is done, so the question is what will shake out between Schiano and Grinch?

I've never been sold on Davis' fit both because of his lengthy, and exclusive, NFL resume and him being a disciple of Wade Phillips' 3-4.

He has a grand total of two years experience in the past 26 years as a college coach or LB coach in a 4-3 and those are these two years he's been at Ohio State.

GREG SCHIANO SAYS HE WOULD LIKE TO BE BACK AT OHIO STATE NEXT SEASON, BUT DOESN'T KNOW YET WHETHER HE WILL BE

100958_h.jpg

While we already know Urban Meyer is in his final week as Ohio State’s head coach, Greg Schiano could be in his last week with the Buckeyes, too.

Schiano has been one of Ohio State’s top assistant coaches for the past three years, serving as the Buckeyes’ associate head coach and defensive coordinator. Whether he will be back with the Buckeyes for a fourth season, however, remains uncertain as Ryan Day prepares to succeed Meyer as Ohio State’s head coach next week.

A decision on Schiano’s future won’t be made until after Tuesday’s Rose Bowl, as Schiano is currently focused on preparing Ohio State’s defense for its final game of the season against Washington, while Day – in his current role as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach – is doing the same with the Buckeyes’ offense.

“Right now I'm worried about one thing, and that's winning the Rose Bowl,” Schiano said during an interview session on Thursday. “Ryan and I have discussed (the future) a little bit. But I really didn't want that to be any (distraction). He's got so much on his plate right now. I want him to get our offense ready, No. 1; he's done an unbelievable job doing that this year. And then he's going to have a whole mess of things. He's already had them on his plate. But January 2nd comes, his life's going to change quite a bit. And he needs time to work through all that.”

Schiano has been linked to several coaching jobs outside of Ohio State in the past 14 months. He signed a memorandum of understanding in November 2017 to become Tennessee’s head coach before the Volunteers backed out of that deal at the 11th hour. He opted to turn down opportunities to become an NFL assistant coach last offseason, but was reportedly interested in the head coaching vacancy at Temple (who ultimately hired Manny Diaz instead) earlier this month.

Schiano said Thursday that he did not want to talk about other opportunities he had pursued in the past or might pursue in the future, as he did not want to distract from his team’s preparation for the Rose Bowl. He did, though, express that he would be interested in staying at Ohio State for another year if Day wishes to retain him, saying that his experience in his first three years with the Buckeyes has “been outstanding.”

“I love being here. My family loves being here,” Schiano said. “Ohio State is a unique, rare place. Every week, incredible fan support. All the things you need to be successful as far as resources. Gene Smith, an incredible athletic director, who has a great staff that provides you with all the things you need to win. And more than anything, we have great players, great kids, young men that are not only talented and fun to coach in that way, but really good people.”

That seems about as “he gone” as it gets, no?

And if people want to freak out about (lack of) future recruits maybe look to the overall instability right now, as opposed to blaming individual coaches.

Once this gets settled in a week or 2, the rest will fall into place and it’ll be fine.

Yep, gotta think if a guy doesn't know, or won't say, if he's coming back, he's probably not coming back.

He was going to be gone last year until the Vol Army went full retard

I feel the same way about it that I did then. I don't know that it's a good thing for OSU but I think it's happening.

The guy was an ace recruiter in NJ and Florida.

No small thing.
The defensive scheme was a total mess this year which falls mostly at his feet- in that sense I think a new architect would be an improvement (promote Grinch or bring someone new in).

At the same time, he is one of the (seemingly) very few rock star recruiters on staff along with Larry Johnson, Hartline, and Alford.

I am concerned about that and anxious to see the staff shakeup, but without knowing anything else, losing him as a recruiter is a huge concern.

Methinks that LB coach Davis will be bumped back to QC coach, not terminated. Or if he finds another home.....having said that, also believe that Day 'owes' Schiano for handling the D while he worked with the O during UFM's hiatus, but only for a year for him to find another home. Believe Day will go after Cincy's LB coach, ex-OSU LBer, to be 'Co-DC in waiting' for Schiano to bail. Grinch will get another year, as will Taver Johnson, unless Day has a CB hotshot on speed dial.

Come to think of it, maybe this is my ideal scenario, to maintain more continuity than not, and bring in some up-and-comers to strengthen the position coaches. The proof of the pudding will be next year's team. There's still enough in the pipeline to have a very decent season, and there will be enough 'seasoning' in the remaining coaches to help the newbie through it. If Day can 'hold the bar high' for the next two years, then tOSU should be solid for at least the next decade. Go Bucks!

Not sure why people bringing up Freeman constantly, when ImO Grinch was brought here to be the DC in waiting. Why bring in a young up and coming coach, just to ditch him for another one? We brag that Bama was after Grinch, but then want to toss him aside for an alum? Not sure why so much love for Freeman but not so much for Grinch.

And to bring it back to Schiano, wouldn’t be surprised at either outcome tbh, though I’d like him gone and let Grinch implement his own scheme and infuse this staff with youth and hunger a la what Hartline is doing with Zone 6

Day owes Schiano for handling the D? That's literally his job

Been reading that a lot of people (not so much on this board) want Schiano gone.

Schiano is one of maybe 3 guys that Bill Belichick (the undisputed GOAT) consults regularly. Losing him would be losing an elite coach, no matter how anyone spins it.

Wanting Schiano gone for the terrible D last year reminds me of people wanting Fickell gone, for the terrible D in the Fickell/Withers years. Yes, the D sucked last year. But Schiano has a strong and highly proven track record. The rest of the defensive coaching staff? Not so much, outside of LJ.

I think Schiano has room to improve his defensive philosophy at Ohio State and tailor it to the players at hand better, going forward. However, I would much much rather jettison the guys with no track record or with a straight-up awful track record (*cough* Bill Davis *cough*) first.

Well said red guard.

Schiano has achieved a great deal as a coach. Not only as a DC but his work at Rutgers is the stuff of legends. He also has been a HC at the highest level (NFL).

I posit he would be a valuable sounding board for Day.

He also is a great recruiter with strong ties to NJ and FL.

I'm trying to figure out what excites people about Grinch.
Recruiting? On field results?

I agree. His ability to turn Rutgers into a winning program was amazing. Dude knows how to lead, coach and motivate. And given the high praise that Day had for him during the interim period, I can't imagine he'd want to get rid of him.
