DC/LB Coach Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

If I remember correctly, wasn't Grinch hired because everyone thought Schiano was gone to Tenn.? Then came back and just had two different philosophies?

Technically, Grinch was on Urban’s shortlist for the DC role when Schiano was interviewing for the Tennessee job. Two weeks after Clay Travis blew that up, the NCAA rule to expand on field coaching staffs from nine to ten passed, so Urban hired Grinch anyway with the new position open with the expectation Grinch was heir apparent to Schiano as everybody knew the Rutgers job would be open soon and Schiano was not a career assistant.

I’m not sure what I’m missing from my original post?

I think the main word to describe the defense last year is basic (Fulton described it as 8th grade), because the coaches weren’t really comfortable with what they were doing, which meant nothing creative and no adjustments.

A visible drop-off in talent the last two seasons; in the front 4 and the back 7. Haskell missed Togiai. Best linebacker was a kid who switched positions, best DB was a freshman, Seveyn Banks just melted into the scenery.

Maybe too much concentration on recruiting for the offense at the expense of the defense?

I think the defensive staff has been deficient in all aspects for a while now. It's hard to say if it's a focus thing or some guys not being good at their job while guys who were are at the end of their time.

Look at the top 5 players in each of the last classes since 2018 and only 5 were defensive players (national rank)

2018
T Vincent #20, Tyreke Johnson #21 and Tyreke Smith #34

2019
Z Harrison and Cade Stover. Harrison was #12, Stover #112

2020
Cody Simon #75 and Darrion Henry-Young #154 were the two highest rated defenders signed but none were top 5 for the OSU class.

That's not a lot of production from the top 7 defensive guys signed over the past 3 years. 2018 class especially is a killer.

Speaking of ‘18 being a killer, man has Vincent ever been a miss so far. Wow. I can’t think of him ever flashing this year.

ok but extend that to the top ten

using 24/7 composite

2018
Mitchell #44, Togiai #55, Proctor #71

2019 - YIKES
Hickman #115, Chambers #231, Eichenberg #327

2020
those guys were up to #9 in that class then comes
Cowan #163, Ransom #167, Watts #202, Martinez #323

so really the 2018 class has produced 1 guy .. that was the one that hurt .. 2019 Day took over at the very end…. 2020 was a bit of an odd ball with Covid and no visits… 2021 we’ll see if those guys pan out…

would love to see a break out of how many D vs O in each class to see if its even or heavy one way or another..

raw numbers are likely going to be about even. It's the massive amount of swings and misses that are just killing the roster right now. You can't have one empty class let alone (arguably) 3.
