DC/LB Coach Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

Something tells me, that as good as the defense has played so far, Knowles still has a lot more tricks up his sleeve

Agreed! Against Rutgers, the only time I really remember OSU cranking up the pressure with LBers was that first possession of the 2nd half after Rutgers got into the red zone. And then the blitzes came and OSU blew up both plays Rutgers tried to run.

Knowles wasn't going to show the Spartans anything in the Rutgers game film.. pure vanilla...
Do you even think that Knowles looks at Sparty as a major threat to open up more of the playbook? Sparty made Coombs look like a genius(though the game was more due to the offense having immediate success) last year

  • On Tennessee: "I saw them, and my daughter went to Tennessee, so I sent a lot of money to Tennessee." Knowles says "that is a lot of what I went against in the Big 12." Knowles says he systematically built his defense for that type of offense.
But can his defense stop a truly smashmouth B1G running game (from the north)? ND and WI didn't really count. I did wonder about a 4-2-5 defense from the Big12.

I’m not all that concerned

4-2-5 is the base formation, sure

If TTUN comes out in one of their 3-TE formations, we all know that you shouldn’t stay in the 4-2-5

WE know that

What are the chances that Jim Knowles knows that? Pretty good, I think

Perhaps your point is that we don’t have much practice in the heavier formations. That’s fair

But Knowles has said that he installs things weeks in advance of using them. He doesn’t believe in installing and using in the same week.

Based on that, I expect the silver bullets will have had a good amount of practice going heavy before Michigan week

Sure, it’s not game reps, but nothing Knowles does will force our opponents to give us practice vs 3 te looks. And the base formation doesn’t really come into it imo
