DC/LB Coach Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

The defense let up 42 points and over 8 yards per play.

Yes, we woulda/coulda/shuldda won but that doesn't mean the defense wasn't garbage.

I'd describe the D as inconsistent rather than garbage vs UGA. Garbage insinuates they didn't do anything well and that simply isn't true. Certainly still need to improve though

This was true vs ttun, too. They had some periods where they looked competent, or even good, then they'd allow an arm punt to convert a 3rd and long. Saw that in a few other games also. Right now, to me, our biggest issue BY FAR is DB play. It has been absolutely atrocious since Hafley left. The lack of ball skills is astounding, almost to the point I'm not sure it's even being coached. We aren't a legitimate NC...hell, probably even B1G competitor, until that gets fixed.

That isn't all on Knowles obviously, but it's his defense. I really thought things were getting fixed over the first few weeks, but boy howdy did they come unglued.

Lotta well regarded recruits are coming here and not getting developed like.they used to. So, either the coaches aren't doing a good job of that , or they're whiffing badly on their talent evals, in which case get somebody who can recruit. Defensive recruiting has definitely fallen off noticeably the last couple of years, but even the 4* kids they are getting aren't meeting expectations. Something stinks there.

Back to baseball, he’s like a soft tossing lefty that can keep hitters off balance for a while but once they figure him out they just sit on his Lady Godiva* fastball. Once they get it, it can never be buried in a Jewish cemetery because it gets tattooed.

(Can you tell I’m dying for baseball season to start?)

* Lady Godiva fastball because it has nothing on it.

Last comment I want to make about coach until spring ball. Everyone has to remember his track record of marked improvement from year to year. He already improved a really bad Defense to at least respectable if not entirely decent his first year with the team already here. If he only improves the Defense by 5 points per game we'll be a contender for all the marbles. If he improves the situational outcomes it'll be a good defense with great games. If he drastically improves the secondary, we'll have the best D in the country and end with a couple rings.

Looking forward to the April version of the troops
