COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The last Ohio State player taken with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft was Orlando Pace in 1997.

At least one Buckeye is ready to mark down the next time it's going to happen. Set your draft calendars for 2020.

Freshman defensive end Chase Young played 13 snaps against Indiana, and saw meaningful first-half action with four veteran defensive ends ahead of him on the depth chart. Anticipate that Young will start next year, next to Nick Bosa. And then, after that, anticipate that Young may be as good as any player in college football.

That's what senior end Jalyn Holmes is assuming.

"That's a future first-round pick," Holmes casually said Monday when asked about Young, after first saying Young reminded him of himself a bit. "The first pick, really, in my eye."

In the whole draft? In the whole draft.

"He's got a real competitive edge. You can have the speed, the length all that, but if you're not a competitor, it really don't matter," Holmes said. "And Chase Young has that competitive edge. I've seen him in practice when he did 20 plays in a row, and it's, 'Chase make a play,' and he made the play. He knows how to compete, and he has a great coach in Coach (Larry) Johnson and Urban Meyer and everybody else.

I know you have probably read about Chase Young a million-and-a-half times already, but he is worth every word.

The junior defensive end has been better-than-advertised and should end up being the first defensive player since Manti Te'o in 2012 to be nominated for the Heisman trophy. No defensive lineman has ever won the award.

Young's dominant season will see him easily break Vernon Gholston's school record for sacks (14 sacks) in a single season. In fact, the more tantalizing mark may be the national record, which is held by Terrell Suggs, who had 24 sacks in his 2002 campaign. He is currently on pace to break the mark if the Buckeyes end up playing for the National Championship.

While Ohio State has seen some dominant defensive linemen in the past 15 years, none of them compare to Chase Young.

Furthermore, Pro Football Focus has stated that Chase Young is the highest-graded defensive player in the history of the company. His 96.4 grade would demolish the 94.4 mark set by Josh Allen last year.

Young is becoming a Heisman favorite, potential No. 1 overall pick, and one of the best pass rushers in college football history right in front of our eyes.

Just keep dropping him into coverage on zone blitzes once in awhile. Good chance of a Pick 6 there. He also has good chances to score on his own strip sacks.

This is the only defensive player I've ever seen where I would be legitimately surprised if he doesn't end up in the end zone at some point during the season. The only reason he hasn't been there yet is that he is on the sidelines when the offense is tired in every game so far (except early in the 4th vs Wiscy).

I was thinking about the zone blitz if they play Minny in Indy. The Gophers love to run slants, and they throw them effectively against heavy blitzes. But having a DE drop into that throwing lane is a great shot at a turnover.

It seems like the narrative is that he actually has a legitimate shot to win the damn thing this year, and that media members – many of whom have Heisman votes – would actually consider

And that's what the latest straw poll from The Athletic ($) suggests as well.

Rooting for Nick Saban and Alabama over Joe Burrow goes against almost every moral fiber in my body, but if Burrow happens to lay an egg against Bama in the upcoming game and Tua's ankle sprain hinders him as much as it seemed to last season, there's a real chance he's at the top of this straw poll in a week. Because lord knows he's going to do some just terrible things to Maryland and Rutgers in the next two games.

My pipe dream is that J.K. Dobbins, Justin Fields and Chase Young all get invites to New York, because that would absolutely melt faces across the country, especially down south.
