College football defensive stars primed for monster seasons

Frankenstein's monster was birthed at Ohio State during the Buckeyes' win at Penn State when Tuimoloau almost single-handedly shut down the Nittany Lions. It was an individual performance that stood out nationally after the former five-star finished with six total tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, two interceptions (including one that was returned for a touchdown) and a pass breakup that led to another turnover. It was the kind of stat line that would even make the jaws of Joey Bosa and Chase Young hit the turf.

So while he put his superstar potential on full display at Penn State, it still feels like there’s a level Tuimoloau hasn’t quite tapped into – one where a dominant, game-wrecking performance comes on a more consistent basis.

Now entering Tuimoloau’s third year at Ohio State, and perhaps his last in college football, Buckeye defensive line coach Larry Johnson hopes to unlock that ability in 2023. And he doesn’t think Tuimoloau needs any wholesale reformations to get there.

“Like I always say, first block the noise. Just concentrate on who you are. Don't worry about all the other things outside,” Johnson said in March. “Just concentrate on your technique and just keep getting better. And again, I say this all the time; it's not the big things, it's the little things that you get better as a player. And that's what we work on, it's all the little things. Where you step, his hand placement, eye discipline, all those things are important to become an elite player. He has the talent and skill set, so how can we make him better? Well, that's my job. I got to find those little things to make him better.”

A CUT ABOVE. Ohio State has one of the best rosters in college football – up there with the Georgias and Alabamas of the sport. There's another talented team that hails from Ann Arbor, but we don't have to talk about them here. Not today, at least.

What makes Ohio State's roster stand out from its FBS counterparts is its top-end talent. Wide receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka, linebacker Tommy Eichenberg and defense end JT Tuimoloau are among the best players in college football, which was proven last week when all four Buckeyes were named to Pro Football Focus' top 50 college football players ahead of 2023.

Here is where each of those players ended up in the rankings and what PFF's Max Chadwick wrote about the Ohio State stars:

NO. 40 - DE JT TUIMOLOAU

If you want to see what Tuimoloau is capable of, turn on his tape against Penn State from 2022. In that contest, the sophomore earned a career-high 93.5 grade while recording two sacks, two interceptions (one of which he returned for a touchdown), a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, a tackle for loss, a batted pass and three pressures. If he gets more consistent as a junior, he could be a top-10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Another week means more preseason awards for Ohio State's standout performers.

On Monday, The Maxwell Football Club announced Ohio State linebacker Tommy Eichenberg and defensive end JT Tuimoloau as two of 86 players named to a watch list for the 29th Chuck Bednarik Award, an honor presented to college football's most outstanding defensive player.
